Summer of Blood breaks new ground in its portrayal of the personalities and politics of the bloody days of June 1381. Breathing life into one of British history's most colourful yet under-explored episodes, Dan Jones recreates the dangerous world of the fourteenth century: a time when pain, squalor, misery and disease formed the fabric of daily life. Yet this was also an era of humanity, charity and social responsibility, one which people genuinely believed could be made better.

"The Great Rising is a re-interpretation of the revolt, the rebels and their often colourful leaders, and is the first new history for nearly one hundred years. Alastair Dunn charts the causes of the Great Rising, and examines how the burgeoning economic expectations of the generation succeeding the Black Death were frustrated by the landlords' determined defense of serfdom, and the growing burden imposed upon the people by the crown, culminating in the hated Poll Taxes. He asks whether the Great Rising had a coherent set of aims linking its participants in different parts of England, follows the dramatic story of the rebels in London, and highlights the largely forgotten, but equally exciting story of rebellion in other parts of England."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Allgemeines, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Frantisek Graus geht von Teilkrisen aus, die sich letztendlich zu einer Gesamtkrise zusammenfügen.

This book contains eight articles, six of which are based on papers contributed to a commemoration conference organised by the Past and Present Society in 1981. Two further articles and an introduction are contributed by other experts. They explore the various dimensions of the rising of 1381: the discontent of peasants and townspeople which became politicised in response to government tax demands; reasons for the attitudes of the subordinated classes to the law, which they perceived as being the instrument of their oppressors; the response of the ruling class and its government to one of the most coherent challenges to feudal order in the Middle Ages. In addition, two contributions on social movements in fourteenth-century France and Italy show that the rising can be regarded as a symptom of the general crisis of European feudal society in the later Middle Ages.
