Prompted by an acknowledgement that a dearth of research exists about curricular decisions for pregnant and parenting teens (Kelly, 2000; Luker, 1996; Luttrell, 2003; Pillow, 2004, Zachry, 2005), this dissertation investigates the English language arts curriculum at Eastview School for Pregnant and Parenting Teens. The study focuses on representing and evaluating the curriculum with the aim of understanding how Eastview's program serves its students. Situated within an historical view of the English language arts curriculum in the United States, I ask how curriculum at Eastview positions the young women as students, mothers, and adolescents. An understanding of curriculum in the field of English language arts is sought throughout the study as well as a challenge to the model of curriculum so frequently deemed as appropriate for "at-risk" students---a model that enforces static knowledge in the form of "basic skills."
