Der Band berichtet unter anderem über geistige Leistungsfähigkeit, Persönlichkeit und soziale Beziehungen im Alter, über körperliche Gesundheit, medizinische Versorgung und zahnmedizinischen Status, über psychische Erkrankungen wie Demenz und Depression, über soziale und kulturelle Aktivitäten und die wirtschaftliche Situation, über Alltagskompetenz, subjektives Wohlbefinden und Unterschiede zwischen Frauen und Männern. Da seit den ersten Erhebungen 20 Jahre vergangen sind, in denen die damaligen Studienteilnehmer bis zu sieben weitere Male befragt wurden, werden die damaligen Ergebnisse durch zwei Kapitel zur längsschnittlichen Fortführung der Berliner Altersstudie ergänzt. Der longitudinale BASE-Datensatz hat sich als sehr fruchtbares Feld für vielseitige Analysen des Alternsprozesses, inter- und intraindividuellen Unterschieden des Alterns und der kausalen Beziehungen zwischen Funktionsbereichen erwiesen. Die Studie wurde ursprünglich im Rahmen der Arbeitsgruppe "Altern und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung" der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften durchgeführt. Die Autorinnen und Autoren aus verschiedenen Disziplinen haben überwiegend am Max-Planck-Institut für Bildungsforschung, an der Freien Universität Berlin und an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin gearbeitet, einige sind inzwischen im Ausland wissenschaftlich auf dem Gebiet der Gerontologie tätig.
