The second book in the "Fractal Complexity" series continues its in-depth review of the works of major African and Black thinkers from the continent and the diaspora. Using a pluridisciplinary approach that combines linguistic presupposition and fractal analysis, the book examines the many levels of meaning and similarity of pattern in literary texts studied for mathematical modeling, thereby enriching both of the contributing fields of study. The book covers a diverse range of topics with insight and outstanding scholarship. Whether exploring the roles of Christianity and Islam, the contributions of Marcus Garvey and Toussaint L'Ouverture, or concepts such as a pax Africana and the underdevelopment of Africa, the material addresses the implicit assumptions on which the truth of any statement hangs. Each chapter includes an introduction to help contextualize the selection, a review of relevant literature, analysis of the reading, a conclusion, and a complete list of references and sources. "Fractal Complexity in the Works of Major Black Thinkers, Volume Two" can be used in upper-division and graduate level courses in political science, socio-linguistics, and public policy analysis. Abdul Karim Bangura holds Ph.D.s in political science, development economics, linguistics, computer science, and mathematics. Dr. Bangura is a professor of research methodology and political science at Howard University, and a researcher-in-residence at the Center for Global Peace in the School of International Service at American University. The author of 70 books and over 600 scholarly articles, Dr. Bangura won the prestigious 2012 Cecil B. Curry Book Award for African Mathematics: From Bones to Computers.

This book contributes to the debate over the culpability of the Trans-Atlantic Slave from various disciplinary perspectives. The general thesis that undergirds the book is that by knowing who was predisposed to benefit the most from the trade and why, prompting them to initiate it, appropriate culpability can be assigned.

On a visit to South Africa in 1981, Dave spent a month with the Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert. During this visit, he felt that he had finally returned to his roots and he started formulating his theory around the use of wilderness for spiritual practice. On later trips to Peru he came into contact with shamans and these meetings made him realize that the shamans had a deep knowledge of healing, that he, in spite of his medical training, was not privy to. On subsequent trips to Zimbabwe and South Africa Dave consulted various sangomas, and through the bone readings of the sangomas it was eventually revealed to him that he had been ignoring his destiny and needed to be trained or undergo thwasa. After finding an elderly Zulu mentor, Dave began his training at the beginning of 2000. During the months in training he had to undergo cleansing practices, practice bone readings, collect his own bones, connect with his ancestors and learn how to channel through the ancestors. After months of rigorous training in very basic circumstances, he returned to California as a qualified sangoma. Here he built in his garden a hut or ndumba in honor of the ancestors. He does bone readings for patients, but he remains an allopathic physician. Through dreams and bone readings it was revealed to him that he should not give up his Western practice, and that by remaining in the Western system, he believes that he is giving more credibility to the indigenous one. This is a thought provoking book written by someone who walks along two roads, who is on the one hand a surgeon of note and on the other a sangoma. The book explores the interconnectedness of life, balancing modern and indigenous, people and nature, physical and spiritual. David Cumes provide a marvelous guide in exploring the potent methods of healing, outside the so-called modern medical setting.

Bones Stones And Molecules

Bones, Stones and Molecules provides some of the best evidence for resolving the debate between the two hypotheses of human origins. The debate between the 'Out of Africa' model and the 'Multiregional' hypothesis is examined through the functional and developmental processes associated with the evolution of the human skull and face and focuses on the significance of the Australian record. The book analyzes important new discoveries that have occurred recently and examines evidence that is not available elsewhere. Cameron and Groves argue that the existing evidence supports a recent origin for modern humans from Africa. They also specifically relate these two theories to interpretations of the origins of the first Australians. The book provides an up-to-date interpretation of the fossil, archaeological and the molecular evidence, specifically as it relates to Asia, and Australia in particular. * Readily accessible to the layperson and professional * Provides concise coverage of current scientific evidence * Presents a robust computer-generated model of human speciation over the last 7 million years * Well illustrated with figures and photographs of important fossil specimens * Presents a synthesis of great ape and human evolution

Ebonics Is Good is a humble response to the clarion call by Mwalimu Carter G. Woodson, Mwalimu Frantz Fanon, and Mwalimu Malcolm X, among others, to address our African language question. As all of these great Africans and others have shown throughout history, it behooves us to counter the assumption of the ill-informed that Ebonics is bad by demonstrating that it is a GOOD language and worthy of respect.

The bones of Pierre Toussaint, the first proposed African-American Catholic saint, were disinterred and spread around in the New World. In his introduction, Patrick Bellegarde-Smith suggests the same is true of the religious practices that peoples of African descent and victims of the Atlantic slave trade brought with them. Fragments of Bone examines the evolution of these religions as they have been adapted and re-contextualized in various New World environments. The essays in Fragments of Bone discuss African religions as forms of resistance and survival in the face of Western cultural hegemony and imperialism. The collection is unique in presenting the voices of scholars primarily outside of the Western tradition, speaking on the issues they, as practitioners, regard as important. Bellegarde-Smith, himself a priest in the Haitian Vodou religion, brings together thirteen contributors from different disciplines, genders, and nationalities. The authors address the creolized African religions beginning with their evolution from Nigeria and Benin to New Orleans, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, Brazil, and Guyana. The more familiar neo-African religions of Vodou and Santeria are also discussed, as are the less well-known religious practices of Kongo-Angolan martial arts, Candomble, Lukumi, and Palomonte. Fragments of Bone draws on an impressive range of sources including research, fieldwork, personal interviews, and spiritual introspection. Examining the theology, cosmology, rituals and their sociopolitical contexts, the authors demonstrate that the African ethos behind these religions remains true to the original theological beliefs of the ancestral practices. Bellegarde-Smith's provocative thesis claims that fragments of the ancestral traditions are fluidly interwoven in the New World African religions as creolized rituals, symbolic systems, and cultural identities. Today, African diasporic religions have become embedded in key social and political institutions. Fragments of Bone is an indispensable resource for scholars of the African and Afro-Caribbean diaspora, or anyone interested in religion, anthropology or African-American studies.
