'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked. 'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat. 'We're all mad here.' The 'Alice' books are two of the most translated, most quoted, and best-known books in the world, but what exactly are they? Apparently delightful, innocent fantasies for children, they are also complex textures of mathematical, linguistic, and philosophical jokes. Alice's encounters with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire-Cat, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and many other extraordinary characters have made them masterpieces of carefree nonsense, yet they also appeal to adults on a quite different level. Layers of satire, allusion, and symbolism about Victorian culture and politics, as well as revelations about the intricate subconscious problems of their author, add to their fascination and make them impossible to classify. This new edition explores the phenomenal range of reference, and the paradoxical appeal of two of the most inventive books in world literature. It also includes an episode removed by Carroll from the proofs of Through the Looking-Glass, called 'The Wasp in a Wig'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

When you look at fine connections, it's hard to say exactly what relation "Alice in Wonderland" has to this book, "Through the Looking-Glass," Oh, it's plainly the same girl, though she seems older, here, and some characters (like Tweedledum and Tweedledee) appear in both. But she doesn't get there the same way, and doesn't refer to her adventures in Wonderland so much as once. Oh well: maybe it's all a dream and she can't remember the last one -- or maybe the magic through the Looking-Glass has hold of her, just as it has hold of Humpty Dumpty, or the Walrus and the Carpenter.

This Top Five Classics edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland includes: • The complete texts of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass • John Tenniel’s 92 original illustrations, including 35 in color • The Hunting of the Snark, with Henry Holiday’s 10 original illustrations • An informative introduction, author bio, and helpful notes Originally written and hand-drawn from 1862 to 1864 by Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) for 10-year-old Alice Liddell, the daughter of Dodgson’s Oxford college dean, the manuscript “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” would become, with the help of John Tenniel’s beautiful and humorous illustrations, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published by Macmillan in 1865 in Britain and the U.S. The book, at turns silly and satiric, gentle and wild, would quickly become beloved around the world by children and adults, and spawn the classic sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871) and the immortal nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1876). The author, a shy mathematics professor called Charles Dodgson, would become internationally famous and ever after remembered by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. The books have never gone out of print and over nearly two centuries have spawned countless offshoots and adaptations—books, artwork, plays, games, and movies. This Top Five Classics edition of the fully illustrated Alice books presents the stories the way they were meant to be enjoyed.

Alice is feeling bored and drowsy while sitting on the riverbank with her older sister, who is reading a book with no pictures or conversations. She then notices a White Rabbit wearing a waistcoat and pocket watch, talking to itself as it runs past. She follows it down a rabbit hole, but suddenly falls a long way to a curious hall with many locked doors of all sizes. Glass House: Alice is playing with a white kitten and a black kitten the offspring of Dinah, Alice's cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland—when she ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror's reflection. Climbing up onto the fireplace mantel, she pokes at the wall-hung mirror behind the fireplace and discovers, to her surprise, that she is able to step through it to an alternative world. In this reflected version of her own house, she finds a book with looking-glass poetry, "Jabberwocky", whose reversed printing she can read only by holding it up to the mirror.
