Während mehrere ausgezeichnete Werke über Flugeigenschaften (meist in englischer Sprache) erschienen sind, ist uns kein modernes und praxisbezogenes Buch über Flugleistungen bekannt. Die wenige verfügbare Literatur enthält so einfache Ansätze für die Polare und den Antrieb, daß die meisten der heute fliegenden Flugzeuge da mit nicht mehr hinreichend genau beschrieben werden können. Grundlage zu diesem Buch stellten die einschlägigen Vorlesungen der Verfasser dar, wobei der Stoff jedoch wesentlich erweitert und vertieft wurde. Dabei zeigte sich, daß bei der Berücksichtigung realistischer Polaren und Triebwerkskennfehler ganz erhebliche mathematische Schwierigkeiten auftreten, die die Herleitung allgemein gültiger Lösungen zumindest erschweren, oft aber auch unmöglich machen. Aller dings ließen sich in vielen Fällen vertretbare Vereinfachungen einführen, die dann zu geschlossenen Lösungen hinreichender Genauigkeit führten. Durch die Einführung einer dimensionslosen Betrachtungsweise war es schließlich möglich, viele Zusam menhänge in geschlossener Form anzugeben, die bis dahin noch niemals formelmäs sig erfaßt wurden.
