This book proposes a novel, original condensation method to beam formulation based on the isogeometric approach to reducing the degrees of freedom to conventional two-node beam elements. In this volume, the author defines the Buntara Condensation Formulation: a unique formulation in condensing the dynamic equilibrium equation for beam structures, suitable for reducing the number of unlimited dynamic equations necessary to yield a classic two-node beam element. Professor Buntara’s method overcomes the problem of the isogeometric approach where the number of degrees of freedom is increased along with the complexity of the geometrical beam element and facilitates implementation of the codes into the existing beam structures programs, and CAD geometrical data into the conventional FE beam element codes. The book proposes a new reduction method where the beam element can be treated as under the conventional beam element theory that has only two nodes at both ends.

This thesis is divided into two distinct and independent parts. Part I focuses on the extension of the concept of Variability Response Function (VRF). The focus of research community has recently shifted from the improvement of structural models and enhancement of the performance of computational tools in a deterministic framework towards the development of tools capable of quantifying the uncertainty of parameters of the structural system and their effect on the system response in a probabilistic framework. One limitation to this direction is the inadequacy of information to fully describe the probabilistic characteristics of a structural system. In effort to bypass this barrier, VRF was introduced by Shinozuka as a tool to calculate the variability of the response of a system. VRF is a deterministic function and for the case of deterministic structural beams where the uncertain system parameters are modeled as homogeneous stochastic fields, it offers an efficient way to circumvent timely computational analyses.

During the past seven years I have been involved in the investigation of high power microwave sources for accelerator and radar applications. As for many others before me, the starting point of this book was a collection of notes on theoretical topics out of the material I had been working on. The notes were the core of a course for graduate students at Cornell University. When I started to prepare these notes it seemed a fairly straight-forward and not very time-consuming task since I had most of the material well organized. Today, three years after the preparation of the first notes, I can only wonder how naive this thought was. Most of my work was oriented towards analytic and quasi-analytic tech niques for the investigation of the interaction of an electron beam with elec tromagnetic waves. These topics are presented in Chaps. 4 and 6. However, for a systematic elaboration of these topics it was necessary to provide some general background, therefore parts of what are today Chaps. 2, 3, and 5 were prepared. Related topics of acceleration concepts were also prepared to some extent but I ran out of time and the material (Chap. 8) was not delivered. In the meantime, various sections of this book were taught at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology and Ben-Gurion University. In the last version I included a discussion on free electron lasers (Chap. 7).
