Moving through the Ichidaian universe like a wraith, his brushes with the law and death are legendary. Born of questionable genetics, she will do anything to prove herself worthy of the weapons she carries and the position she's won by combat. This dissertation incorporates 102 in-depth interviews and over 3 years of participant observation in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, to explore what happens to the adult children of unauthorized Mexican migrants as they move into adulthood. As such, it offers data driven insight into current scholarly and policy debates on immigration reform with respect to a little-known but significant subset of the immigrant unauthorized population. At the macro-level, I explore the contradictory relationship that exists between U.S. immigration and economic policies, in the absence of broader family integration efforts. Extensive fieldwork and interviews allowed me to gain in-depth knowledge of the ways in which these young adults experienced unauthorized status at the various stages of adolescence and adulthood. What I find is that as children they experience a liminal "illegality" during childhood, whereby most of the limitations of unauthorized status are dormant, and a re(-animated) "illegality" as they move into adulthood. While undocumented status, or "illegality," undoubtedly limits the options of the young adults in my study, it is mediated at the community level by institutions such as schools and community based organizations. The young adults in question are not without agency, and employ various strategies to offset their circumstances. Those who develop networks of support and information during high school, for example, are able to mobilize resources that allow them successful transitions. As they move into college, they enjoy the cocooning provided by the institution and develop positive identities and important skills that allow them to successfully negotiate college barriers and assert claims about broader societal and labor market participation. On the other hand, those unauthorized youngsters who are not provided the opportunities to develop skills and build relationships with adult mentors have difficulty moving on to college and, as a result, confront the limitations, dangers and stress of "illegality." Without the legal protections of school, many of these young people find day-to-day life to be saturated with legal limitations. At some point, however, these young men and women hit a dead end. Based on the data, this dissertation also argues for interventions at the policy and community levels.

Anne Merrill, a reluctant psychic, becomes an OSS agent in World War II and soon finds herself not only fighting the regular war but, also, a psychic war with her powerful, psychic father, Albert. He and the worldwide, ancient, secret society, the Chhayas Society (Shadows Society), are using psychic powers along with earth forces that magnify those powers to assist the Nazis. Besides honing her psychic abilities to triumph over her father, Anne, also, uses them in the regular war effort when she plays cat-and-mouse games with a female, Nazi spy in Istanbul. Later, she is thrust into the heart of the Third Reich, Berlin, when OSS penetrates the Third Reich to gain valuable inside information. During all this, Anne and fellow OSS agent, half-white, half-Navajo, Paul Bancroft, who is haunted by the shadow of a terrible, hereditary disease, fall in love. At the book's conclusion, the otherworldly battle and the ordinary battle merge into one.
