Die Beschichtungstechnik nimmt heute eine wichtige Rolle in der Werkzeugherstellung ein. Die Mehrzahl aller Zerspanwerkzeuge wird heute beschichtet. Bei der Optimierung von Beschichtungen findet häufig die Methode des "Trial-and-Error" Anwendung. Die Entwicklung von neuen Schichten erfordert einen hohen experimentellen Aufwand, um das Einsatzverhalten zu untersuchen. Einen Ansatz, neue Werkzeuge und Beschichtungen mit reduziertem experimentellem Aufwand zu entwickeln, stellt die Modellierung dar. Das Aufbringen von Beschichtungen ist ein Eingriff in das tribologische System der Zerspanung. Dieses muss in der Modellierung berücksichtigt werden. In dieser Arbeit wurde die Tribomechanik von Beschichtungen beim Einsatz in der Zerspanung untersucht. Ziel war es, diese mit Hilfe von Modell- und Zerspanuntersuchungen in Kombination mit der Methode der finiten Elemente (FEM) grundlegend zu untersuchen. Die Einflussgrößen auf das tribologische Verhalten von Beschichtungen konnten mit Hilfe tribologischer Modelluntersuchungen identifiziert werden. Zudem wurden auch deren Wechselwirkungen analysiert. Hierzu waren umfassende experimentelle Versuche notwendig. Die Tribomechanik wurde für eine Vielzahl an Werkstoff-, Beschichtungs-, Kühlschmierstoff- und Parameterkombinationen untersucht. Dies umfasst auch die Bestimmung von Reibparametern. Als wesentliche Eingangsgrößen für die Genauigkeit der numerischen Berechnung konnten das Reibungsmodell und die Reibungsparameter, der thermische Übergang und die thermophysikalischen Eigenschaften der Schichten identifiziert werden. Für die thermophysikalischen Eigenschaften der Beschichtungen und Werkstoffe wurden temperaturabhängige Werte in die Materialmodelle implementiert. Ziel war es, den Prozess hinsichtlich der relevanten Aspekte in einem Modell abzubilden. Zur Verifizierung des Modells dienten Ergebnisse aus experimentellen Zerspanversuchen. Mit dem entwickelten FE-Modell war es möglich, grundsätzliche Einflussgrößen auf die Tribomechanik zu identifizieren. Es konnten geeignete Werte für die Einflussgrößen, wie z. B. den thermischen Übergangskoeffizienten mit Hilfe des FE-Modells ermittelt werden, die im Experiment nicht direkt messbar sind. Zudem war es möglich, den Einfluss der thermophysikalischen Eigenschaften der Schichten zu untersuchen. Hierbei konnten auch physikalische Grenzen betrachtet werden und damit die Relevanz bestimmter Einflussgrößen ermittelt werden.
