There is limited research that examines the effect of communication skills training for teachers. The field of psychological counseling has identified effective commication skills in attending behaviors and basic microskills. Microcounseling is a systematic approach to training counselors in those skills. Microcounseling is widely used for the purpose of building effective counselor-client relationships and has been studied and analyzed over six decades in counseling and other fields. This study explored the effect of microcounseling on teacher use of these skills in an instructional setting in a kindergarten-12 educational context. Using a single-subject research (SSR) multiple-baseline across subjects design, this study was conducted in one-on-one instructional setting to determine (a) the degree to which attending behaviors and basic microskills are used by teachers, and (b) if a functional relationship exists between microcounseling and the use of these skills. Effect on student engagement was also explored. Three teacher participants and their students were selected from a group of volunteers providing one-on-one or small group instruction in a suburban public school district in the Noreastern United States in the fall of 2012. The study examined the communication skills teachers used before and after microcounseling and how students were affected by these skills in an instructional setting. No funtional resationship was found. Intentional elements of the teacher-student relationahip and the counselor-client relationship were identified. Distinctions in purposeful use of microskills and attending behaviors were made.
