Fully revised and expanded, this second edition of A. Blythe's successful title on electrical properties of polymers covers both the fundamental and recent developments in this growing area. This book provides a broad and comprehensive account on the topic, describing underlying physical principles and synthesis through to emerging technologies. The new edition provides particular emphasis to the new generation of conductive polymers. Emerging uses of polymers in industrial applications are described and cover topics such as light-emitting diodes, flexible polymers and soft electronics. Written in an accessible style, without complicated theory, this book combines key concepts with applications. With the inclusion of further reading material provided at the end of each chapter for interested readers, this book is an authoritative guide to advanced-level undergraduates and graduates studying polymer, materials and physical sciences. It will also be of significant interest to researchers working in this evolving field.

Electrical Properties of Polymers describes the electric phenomena responsible for determining the chemical and supramolecular structure of polymers and polymeric materials. The authors explore the properties of quasi-static dipoles, reviewing Brownian motion, Debye theory, Langevin and Smoluchowski equations, and the Onsager model. This reference displays Maxwell and entropy equations, along with several others, that depict the thermodynamics of dielectric relaxation. Featuring end-of-chapter problems and useful appendices, the book reviews molecular dynamics simulations of dynamic dielectric properties and inspects mean-square dipole moments of gases, liquids, polymers, and fixed conformations.

Electrical Properties of Polymers covers topics on the electrical properties of polymers. The book discusses the electrical conduction in polymers; the structure and charge generation in low-dimensions; and the photophysical processes, energy transfer, and photoconduction in polymers. The text also describes the photovoltaic phenomena in organic solids; thermally stimulated discharge current analysis of polymers; and the polymeric electrets. The contact electrification of polymers and its elimination; and the dielectric breakdown phenomena in polymers are also considered. Materials scientists and chemists will find the book invaluable.

This book treats polymeric materials from the most insulating to the most conducting (superconductive) and is an effort to combine and correlate some of the experimental and theoretical literature in this field. The electrical properties of polymers is an inherently interdisciplinary topic, being closely associated on the one hand with mechanical properties of polymers (polarization and relaxation), and on the other hand with semiconductive properties (conduction and breakdown). The relevant aspects of these contingent subjects are unified and analyzed in this volume, and the available basic knowledge of structure to properties is correlated. The book also discusses the emerging field of molecular electronics.

The study of the electrical properties of polymers constitutes a substantial fraction of the total research interest in macro molecular behavior. Because of the increasing attention now being paid to theoretical and experimental aspects of the phenomena encountered, a symposium focusing particularly on dielectric behavior was held at the l6lst National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Los Angeles, California, March, 1971. The authoritative papers in this volume were all presented at this symposium, which was sponsored by the Polymer Division of the American Chemical Society. An obvious advantage of such a collection is that it keep~ together closely related material which would otherwise tend to be dispersed amongst different journals; a further factor of which most authors represented here have taken advantage is that it gives an opportunity to present research in less attenuated form than is now normally possible in journals. I wish to thank all the authors for their uniformly excellent contributions and for their cooperation in the publication of this volume. Thanks are also due to Dr. S. Matsuoka for chairing one of the sessions at the symposium. September, 1971 Frank E. Karasz v LIST OF CONTRIBUTORS B.
