Describing and evaluating the basic principles and methods of subsurface sensing and imaging, Introduction to Subsurface Imaging is a clear and comprehensive treatment that links theory to a wide range of real-world applications in medicine, biology, security and geophysical/environmental exploration. It integrates the different sensing techniques (acoustic, electric, electromagnetic, optical, x-ray or particle beams) by unifying the underlying physical and mathematical similarities, and computational and algorithmic methods. Time-domain, spectral and multisensor methods are also covered, whilst all the necessary mathematical, statistical and linear systems tools are given in useful appendices to make the book self-contained. Featuring a logical blend of theory and applications, a wealth of color illustrations, homework problems and numerous case studies, this is suitable for use as both a course text and as a professional reference.

At publication, The Control Handbook immediately became the definitive resource that engineers working with modern control systems required. Among its many accolades, that first edition was cited by the AAP as the Best Engineering Handbook of 1996. Now, 15 years later, William Levine has once again compiled the most comprehensive and authoritative resource on control engineering. He has fully reorganized the text to reflect the technical advances achieved since the last edition and has expanded its contents to include the multidisciplinary perspective that is making control engineering a critical component in so many fields. Now expanded from one to three volumes, The Control Handbook, Second Edition brilliantly organizes cutting-edge contributions from more than 200 leading experts representing every corner of the globe. The first volume, Control System Fundamentals, offers an overview for those new to the field but is also of great value to those across any number of fields whose work is reliant on but not exclusively dedicated to control systems. Covering mathematical fundamentals, defining principles, and basic system approaches, this volume: Details essential background, including transforms and complex variables Includes mathematical and graphical models used for dynamical systems Covers analysis and design methods and stability testing for continuous-time systems Delves into digital control and discrete-time systems, including real-time software for implementing feedback control and programmable controllers Analyzes design methods for nonlinear systems As with the first edition, the new edition not only stands as a record of accomplishment in control engineering but provides researchers with the means to make further advances. Progressively organized, the other two volumes in the set include: Control System Applications Control System Advanced Methods

With a strong emphasis on solving problems and exploring concepts, this guidebook delivers an accessible yet comprehensive introduction to continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems. Discusses how to download signals (time series) from the Web and analyze the data. Includes details on common types of digital filters, such as moving average and exponential moving average filters, with applications to filtering data downloaded from the Web. Addresses signal analysis using the DFT to extract the dominant cyclic components of a signal. Addresses the issue of noise, which often arises in engineering, business, finance, and other fields. For those interested in learning more about signals and systems.

Signals and Systems: A Primer with MATLAB® provides clear, interesting, and easy-to-understand coverage of continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems. Each chapter opens with a historical profile or career talk, followed by an introduction that states the chapter objectives and links the chapter to the previous ones. All principles are presented in a lucid, logical, step-by-step approach. As much as possible, the authors avoid wordiness and detail overload that could hide concepts and impede understanding. In recognition of the requirements by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) on integrating computer tools, the use of MATLAB® is encouraged in a student-friendly manner. MATLAB is introduced in Appendix B and applied gradually throughout the book. Each illustrative example is immediately followed by a practice problem along with its answer. Students can follow the example step by step to solve the practice problem without flipping pages or looking at the end of the book for answers. These practice problems test students’ comprehension and reinforce key concepts before moving on to the next section. Toward the end of each chapter, the authors discuss some application aspects of the concepts covered in the chapter. The material covered in the chapter is applied to at least one or two practical problems or devices. This helps students see how the concepts are applied to real-life situations. In addition, thoroughly worked examples are given liberally at the end of every section. These examples give students a solid grasp of the solutions as well as the confidence to solve similar problems themselves. Some of the problems are solved in two or three ways to facilitate a deeper understanding and comparison of different approaches. Ten review questions in the form of multiple-choice objective items are provided at the end of each chapter with answers. The review questions are intended to cover the "little tricks" that the examples and end-of-chapter problems may not cover. They serve as a self-test device and help students determine chapter mastery. Each chapter also ends with a summary of key points and formulas. Designed for a three-hour semester course on signals and systems, Signals and Systems: A Primer with MATLAB® is intended as a textbook for junior-level undergraduate students in electrical and computer engineering. The prerequisites for a course based on this book are knowledge of standard mathematics (including calculus and differential equations) and electric circuit analysis.

This book provides a comprehensive, modern approach to signals and systems, concentrating on those aspects that are most relevant for applications such as communication systems and signal processing. Emphasis is placed on building the reader's intuition and problem-solving ability, rather than formal theorems and proofs. "The coverage of the book is comprehensive, providing a broad overview, using a whole host of exercises. The wealth of the worked examples and problems complemented by solutions is particularly attractive. The level of mathematics is not too daunting for the good average student and the authors do their utmost to mitigate the difficulties, skilfully using worked examples." Prof. Lajos Hanzo, University of Southampton author of Mobile Radio Communications and Single-and Multi-carrier QAM Check out the companion Website for 'Systool' simulation software using Java applets to animate many of the key examples and exercises from the book.
