The biological activation of dioxygen is a key reaction in biological systems. Enzymes involved in direct oxygen activation are oxidases and oxygenases. Multi-copper oxidases are an important class of oxidases reducing dioxygen in a four-electron reduction to water with concomitant one-electron oxidation of the reducing substrate. The progress in the characterization and understanding of the structure and function of these enzymes has advanced so tremendously over the last ten years that the publication of a book documenting these achievements has been overdue.Especially the recent discovery of a key role of the FET3 protein of Saccharomyces cerevisae, a multi-copper oxidase, in iron metabolism of this eukaryote has underpinned the function of the plasma multi-copper oxidase ceruloplasmin in vetebrate iron transport. The lately determined x-ray structure of human ceruloplasmin confirms its close structural relatedness to the plant multi-copper oxidases ascorbate oxidase and laccase and due to strong amino-acid sequence similarities has allowed to construct a useful model of the more distantly related blood-clotting factor VIII.This book contains review articles from experts in the field, dealing with modern spectroscopy, enzyme kinetics, bioinorganic chemistry, x-ray crystallography, electron transfer reactions, molecular biology, medical aspects and potential industrial applications of the three main members of multi-copper oxidases, i.e., laccase, ascorbate oxidase and ceruloplasmin.

"Written by one of the most prolific and well-respected chemical engineers that the industry has ever produced. The Yaws Handbook of Thermodynamic Properties of Hydrocarbons and Chemicals is the most comprehensive and thorough volume ever written on the thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons and chemicals. Carl Yaws is the world's foremost authority on vapor pressure and the properties of chemicals and he again proves it in this follow up to his important work published in 2005 by GPC Books, The Yaws' Handbook of Physical Properties of Hydrocarbons and Chemicals. Covering the thermodynamic properties of hydrocarbons and chemicals, this volume covers the spectrum, including chapters on the heat capacity and entropy of gas, the heat capacity and entropy of solids, the heat capacity of liquids, the entropy of formation and many other topics. Including more than 12,800 organic and inorganic chemicals, this resourceful work covers C1 to C100 organics and Ac to Zr inorganics collected together in one volume, making it most useful for any chemical engineer's library. Not just useful for the scientist in the lab or the student, this volume provides valuable information for the engineer working in the field. The design of heat exchangers and other equipment for heating or cooling substances to temperatures necessary in process applications requires knowledge of heat capacity, covered in the first portion of the book. The heat effects of chemical reactions are ascertained from enthalpy of formation, covered in chapter four. Other chapters cover the Helmholtz energy of formation, the Gibbs energy of formation, internal energy of formation and entropy of formation, useful in modeling and ascertaining the energy of explosions. The thermodynamic properties provided in the book are important in design, operations, research, development, environmental and safety, covering literally thousands of compounds. This coverage greatly exceeds the coverage of any other book and makes The Yaws Handbook of Thermodynamic Properties of Hydrocarbons and Chemicals a must-have for anyone working in the fields of chemical engineering, process engineering, refining and chemistry."--Publisher's website.

Supramolecular chemistry has become not only a major field of chemistry, but is also a vivid interface between chemistry, biology, physics, and materials science. Although still a relatively young field, termini such as molecular recognition, host-guest chemistry, or self-assembly are now common knowledge even for chemistry students, and research has already been honored with a Nobel Prize. This first book on supramolecular organometallic chemistry combines two areas in chemistry that are experiencing the fastest developments. It provides a comprehensive review of various organometallic assemblies, arranged according to the types of intermolecular bonding. Details on the synthesis, structures, and properties of these compounds will be a valuable asset to the scientific community. The broad spectrum of assemblies containing main group element, transition metal, or f-element metal and a diverse range of ligands, held together by different bonding interactions make this a fascinating compilation. Illustrated extensively, this book is a very easily accessible, yet wide-ranging source of information.

Characterisation Methods in Inorganic Chemistry provides a fresh alternative to the existing theoretical and descriptive inorganic chemistry texts by adopting a techniques-based approach and providing problem-solving opportunities to show how analytical methods are used to help us characteriseinorganic compounds. The text covers the full range of analytical techniques employed by inorganic chemists, emphasizing those in most frequent use: NMR, diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and IR. The additional coverage on other techniques allows readers to study these less widely used methods when relevant to theirspecific course material. Each chapter follows a clear, structured format, which begins with a brief introduction to the technique and basic theory behind it before moving on to data collection and analysis, typical data and interpretation, with numerous worked examples, self- tests and problems.
