Findings suggest that "risk" plays a pivotal role in how academic achievement is understood and acted on in education sites. However, contrary to perspectives suggesting "risk" and the deployment of the category of the "at-risk" student operate in a universal and entirely problematic manner, this study illustrates the complicated, complex and contextual ways these notions emerge. While engaging in risk discourse---or identifying those students presumed more likely than their peers to experience low academic achievement---is seen as necessary to remedy students' academic needs, this process simultaneously may rely on stereotypical and/or racist beliefs about students and thus, limit its effectiveness. Yet at the same time, who gets categorized as "at-risk" depends on markers that converge and diverge from entrenched societal constructions of normality. These findings, coupled with the complex, yet still seemingly deficit explanations used to account for low academic achievement suggest the need to illuminate and challenge the multiple configurations of knowledge about risk and academic achievement that inform teacher practice.

In order to make a complete and accurate psychological analysis of an adolescent, the psychologist must understand the clinical interpretations of psychological test performance in light of the adolescent's development. The book begins at the point after the tests have been administered and scored, and it examines the psychological growth of adolescents from ages twelve to twenty-one through the interpretation of the psychological test data. Eagle and Schwartz provide actual test data based on thirty years of testing thousands of adolescents in school settings, guidance clinics, psychiatric hospitals, private treatment, and research programs. For each age group, the authors provide a picture of the normal developmental level and test results, with an explanation of how to evaluate degrees of deviance from normal expectations.
