In literature and film the spy chief is an all-knowing, all-powerful figure who masterfully moves spies into action like pieces on a chessboard. How close to reality is that depiction, and what does it really take to be an effective leader in the world of intelligence? This first volume of Spy Chiefs broadens and deepens our understanding of the role of intelligence leaders in foreign affairs and national security in the United States and United Kingdom from the early 1940s to the present. The figures profiled range from famous spy chiefs such as William Donovan, Richard Helms, and Stewart Menzies to little-known figures such as John Grombach, who ran an intelligence organization so secret that not even President Truman knew of it. The volume tries to answer six questions arising from the spy-chief profiles: how do intelligence leaders operate in different national, institutional, and historical contexts? What role have they played in the conduct of international relations and the making of national security policy? How much power do they possess? What qualities make an effective intelligence leader? How secretive and accountable to the public have they been? Finally, does popular culture (including the media) distort or improve our understanding of them? Many of those profiled in the book served at times of turbulent change, were faced with foreign penetrations of their intelligence service, and wrestled with matters of transparency, accountability to democratically elected overseers, and adherence to the rule of law. This book will appeal to both intelligence specialists and general readers with an interest in the intelligence history of the United States and United Kingdom.

Journal of the Indian Wars, or JIW was a quarterly publication on the study of the American Indian Wars. Before JIW, no periodical dedicated exclusively to this fascinating topic was available. JIW's focus was on warfare in the United States, Canada, and the Spanish borderlands from 1492 to 1890. Published articles also include personalities, policy, and military technologies. JIW was designed to satisfy both professional and lay readers with original articles of lasting value and a variety of columns of interest, plus book reviews, all enhanced with maps and illustrations. JIW's lengthy essays of substance are presented in a fresh and entertaining manner. This issue is dedicated to battles and leaders of the early United States east of the Mississippi River. Eastern battles remain the most obscure in the history of the Indian conflicts, and those fought in the "Old Southeast" are the most obscure of all. This issue includes the following topics: Editor's Forward Prelude to Horseshoe's Bend: The Battles of Emuckfaw and Enotochopco "The Carnage was Dreadful": The Battle of Horseshoe Bend The Blackhawk War Reconsidered: A New Interpretation of its Causes and Consequences William Clark's Journal of Maj. Gen. Anthony's Wayne's 1794 Campaign Against the Indians in Ohio "'Fighting the Flames of a Merciless War': Secretary of War Henry Knox and the Indian War in the Old Northwest," 1790-1795 The Battle of Fallen Timbers: An Historical Perspective Interview: A Conversation with Archaeologist G. Michael Pratt Captain Albert Barnitz and the Battle of the Washita: New Documents, New Insights Features: The Tippacanoe Battlefield and Museum The Indian Wars: Organizational, Tribal, and Museum News Thomas Online: A Beginner's Guide to Indian Wars Research on the Web Book Reviews Index

The author of Legacy of Secrecy takes a deep dive into Nixon’s motives during the Watergate scandal—“Incendiary stuff” (Independent). For the first time, the groundbreaking investigative research in Watergate: The Hidden History adds crucial missing pieces to the story—information that President Nixon wanted, but couldn’t get, and that wasn’t available to the Senate Watergate Committee or to Woodward and Bernstein. This new information not only reveals remarkable insights into Nixon’s motivation for Watergate, but also answers the two most important remaining questions: What were the Watergate burglars after? And why was Nixon willing to risk his Presidency to get it? Watergate: The Hidden History reexamines the historical record, including new material only available in recent years. This includes thousands of recently declassified CIA and FBI files, newly released Nixon tapes, and exclusive interviews with those involved in the events surrounding Watergate—ranging from former Nixon officials to key aides for John and Robert Kennedy. This book also builds on decades of investigations by noted journalists and historians, as well as long-overlooked investigative articles from publications like Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times. “One of the best investigative journalists in the United States . . . there are incredible revelations in this book.” —Chicago Tribune “There are incredible revelations in this book that has taken Waldron years to write and he has new revealing formerly restricted evidence to go on . . . It is great current reversionary history.” —Liz Smith, The Huffington Post
