In contemporary science education research, an adequate understanding of the `nature of science' is regarded an important aspect of scientific literacy and, thus, a central goal of science education. At present, German science education standards only implicitly include nature of science aspects, yet. This dissertation project, therefore, aims to provide a first approach to include nature of science in the German science education standards. At the core of this dissertation, a theoretical model of competence is derived which defines competence regarding nature of science and distinguishes between Nature of Scientific Inquiry (NOSI) and Nature of Scientific Knowledge (NOS). Two studies were conducted to investigate the theoretical model's empirical validity. The studies included investigating the model's inner structure, a discrimination against control variables as well as a comparison of German and U.S. students.

This book reports the findings from the tri-national video study Quality of Instruction in Physics (QuIP). Within the scope of the QuIP study, physics instruction was investigated in a total of 103 classes from-Finland, North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and German-speaking Switzerland. The main aim was to identify typical patterns of physics instruction of the three samples and to investigate conditions under which these patterns are successful with respect to students' learning, interest and motivation. Among others instructional characteristics, the quality of students' practical work, successful patterns of sequencing, the subject matter structure and teaching strategies were investigated by means of analyses of video-recorded lessons. Variables external to instruction that were investigated included teachers' professional knowledge and students' cognitive abilities. The study followed a pre-post-design with data collection prior to and after an instructional unit on electrical energy and power. The results are well in line with the findings from large-scale international studies indicating a particularly successful instructional pattern in Finland. A comparison of characterisation of instruction in comparison between the three countries reveals important findings for the improvement of the teaching and learning of physics in secondary school education.

Ausgehend von einer Verortung des fachlichen Wissens in übergeordneten Kompetenzmodellen aus der Lehrerbildungsforschung und einem neu erstellten Modell der Kompetenz von Fachphysikern werden zentrale Aspekte (Fachwissen im engeren Sinne, kognitive Aspekte der Erkenntnisgewinnung) in ihrer Struktur modelliert und in einem Testinstrument operationalisiert. Im Fokus steht dabei insbesondere eine vertiefte, stärker vernetzte Wissensstufe. Zur inhaltsvaliden Item-Modell-Zuordnung werden entscheidungsbaumunterstützte Expertenratings eingesetzt. Empirisch lassen sich die erfassten Wissensfacetten sinnvoll in Teilskalen trennen. Eine Charakterisierung nach eher mathematisch und eher konzeptionell dominierten Facetten gelingt mittels linearer Regression. Auch können für Lehramts- und Fachstudierende unterschiedliche Wissensprofile (z. B. in Bezug auf die Relevanz schulischen oder universitären Wissens) herausgearbeitet werden. Aufbauend auf diesen Ergebnissen wird für jede Teilskala ein Niveaumodell erstellt, welches wesentlich auf der hierarchischen Komplexität der Items basiert. Die so erhaltenen Niveaus können vor dem theoretischen Hintergrund analysiert werden, einige deuten dabei auf problematische Lernstände der jeweiligen Studierenden hin.
