Despite the available general literature in intelligent control, there is a definite lack of knowledge and know-how in practical applications of intelligent control in drying. This book fills that gap. Intelligent Control in Drying serves as an innovative and practical guide for researchers and professionals in the field of drying technologies, providing an overview of control principles and systems used in drying operations, from classical to model-based to adaptive and optimal control. At the same time, it lays out approaches to synthesis of control systems, based on the objectives and control strategies, reflecting complexity of drying process and material under drying. This essential reference covers both fundamental and practical aspects of intelligent control, sensor fusion and dynamic optimization with respect to drying.

Still the Most Complete, Up-To-Date, and Reliable Reference in the Field Drying is a highly energy-intensive operation and is encountered in nearly all industrial sectors. With rising energy costs and consumer demands for higher quality dried products, it is increasingly important to be aware of the latest developments in industrial drying technologies. For two decades, Mujumdar’s industry-standard Handbook of Industrial Drying has been the quintessential source of state-of-the-art information in the field, and this third edition is no exception. New in the Third Edition Covering everything from the fundamentals of drying to the latest dryer types, nearly two-thirds of this edition comprises new material at the vanguard of research and industrial practice. In addition to several rewritten and many more revised chapters, new chapters cover such topics as: Spreadsheet-aided dryer design Indirect and pneumatic drying Drying of fish and seafood, grain, herbal medicines, and tea Drying of nanosize products, enzymes, and textiles Dewatering and drying of wastewater treatment sludge Heat pump drying and industrial crystallization Solid–liquid separation for pretreatment Providing important data along with the experience, insight, and practical know-how contributed by experts from around the world, the Handbook of Industrial Drying, Third Edition remains the definitive reference to the complete spectrum of current and emerging industrial drying technologies.

The 2014 International Conference on Energy and Power Engineering (EPE2014), will be held on April 26–27, 2014, in Hong Kong, China. The aim of this international convention is to bring together experts and scholars from around the world and offer them a chance to share the latest research results in the field of Energy and Power Engineering. We all know that over the past few decades, a great change has happened in the field of the environment technology, and the science technology is growing faster and faster. In order to keep up with the daily changing situation, we have sent invitations to experts, scholars and other people who have devoted himself in related fields, and it is a great honor to us that most of them have accepted our invitation and supported the EPE2014 with their latest studies. Up till now, we have received over three hundred papers from various countries; this shows that there has been a growing interest in the field of energy and power engineering. Among those papers received, we have eventually chosen about a hundred to be presented and included in this proceeding. These papers generally represented the current research status in this field and the future trend. We sincerely believe that these papers could be valuable to the future work of yours. Finally, on behalf of the committee, I would like to deeply express our gratitude to those who have supported the EPE2014, especially the international experts who helped reviewing papers, the DEStech Publications help publish the conference proceedings, and last but not least, the authors of these inspiring papers. Without the help from these people, EPE2014 would not be as half successful as it is now. Here, welcome to EPE2014 and let’s hope that it will be a great success. Tim Chou

This Proceedings contains the papers presented at the 9th IFAC AIRTC'2000 Symposium on "Artificial Intelligence in Real-Time Control 2000", held at Budapest Polytechnic, Hungary, on 2 - 4 October. AIRTC'2000 builds on the excellent reputation of previous meetings in the series for providing top-quality papers in this important research field. A positive development illustrated by this Proceedings is a new trend towards pragmatism in the research field. Examples of this trend are: an increase in the number of actual industrial applications; support for more widespread use of new sophisticated technologies (e.g. materials design); further intertwining of artificial intelligence and control theory methods that reduces the reliance on "blind faith", still too often associated with AI methods. Many things have changed since the first AIRTC event in 1988. Two examples illustrate the change in the general attitude of the IFAC family: in 1990, one of the major closing presentations of the IFAC World Congress warned the control community about the "coming hordes" of AI people. In 1999, one of the plenary papers at the IFAC World Congress pointed out that the AI based methods form a natural extension of control theory to the class of non-linear systems with incomplete information (at least as far as the optimisation is concerned). This contrast in attitudes shows how, during the past decade, many AI people have embraced control theory and many control people have learned the basics of AI. This Proceedings serves to continue this excellent dialogue, by providing many quality papers which link both fields.
