Disturbed children constitute a sizeable and varied percentage of the child population. Generally, two to three percent have severe, longstanding problems and 20 to 30 percent have current, more transient problems. While preventive efforts are needed, it also seems obvious that many children will continue to function in a disturbed and disturbing fashion and will continue to require vari ous kinds of therapeutic interventions. This book deals with ways of helping families cope with the difficulty of rais ing adolescents. Professional social workers - along with other human ser vice professionals - encounter these families in numerous settings: child welfare and family service agencies, hospitals, schools, community mental health clinics, residential treatment centers, juvenile halls and detention centers, recreational and vocational training organizations, and many others. While families from all walks of life may be found in these settings, families who have suffered the additional stresses of poverty, discrimination, and the consequences of physical and mental illness are commonly overrepresented. Even under the best of circumstances, the adolescent years often put the strongest family structures to the test - sometimes to the breaking point. A recent national study of over one thousand average, middle-income, two parent families reviewed the strengths, stresses, and satisfactions of the family life cycle (Olson and McCubbin 1983). As many would expect, families with adolescents were found to experience more stress and lower levels of family adaptability, cohesion, and marital and family satisfaction than any other developmental stage. The families with adolescents who fared best were those with such marital resources as good communication and conflict resolution skills, satisfying sexual relations, and good parent-adolescent communication.

Since 1980, clinical psychologists and other professionals have gathered in Merseyside each year for the "Annual Merseyside Course in Clinical Psychology". The aim of this annual event is to offer post qualification training and a forum for discussion in areas of current clinical interest. Over the years, the course has attracted national and international speakers and attenders of the highest calibre, plus up-to-the-minute reports on current research. In August 1984, the course was held, for the first time, in the beautiful old city of Chester. As always, the papers were presented by leading clinicians and researchers in their respective fields; once again, this included several contributions from Merseyside psychologists. Since 1981, the proceedings of this conference have been published as "Current Issues in Clinical Psychology". The present volume - Volume 4 - covers four major areas of current interest: The Child and Therapy; Rehabilitation Across the Specialties; New Directions for Psychology and the Law; and Addictive Behaviors. Each of these areas must be relevant to the work of almost all clinical psychologists, at various times. The volume closely reflects the order and content of papers presented at the 1984 conference, although it also includes one paper (by Guliz Elal-Lawrence) written specially for this publication. The 1984 conference was widely acknowledged to be another succes- both academically and socially - and I hope that this volume fully conveys the interesting and stimulating ideas and information enjoyed by those who attended.

Psychodynamic theory and practice are often misunderstood as appropriate only for the worried well or for those whose problems are minimal or routine. Nothing could be further from the truth.
