More than 400 films and 150 television series have featured time travel--stories of rewriting history, lovers separated by centuries, journeys to the past or the (often dystopian) future. This book examines some of the roles time travel plays on screen in science fiction and fantasy. Plot synopses and credits are listed for TV series from England, Canada, the UK and Japan, as well as for films from around the world. Tropes and plot elements are highlighted. The author discusses philosophical questions about time travel, such as the logic of timelines, causality (what's to keep time-travelers from jumping back and correcting every mistake?) and morality (if you correct a mistake, are you still guilty of it?).

THE GREAT MOVIE COMEDIANS: FROM CHARLIE CHAPLIN TO WOODY ALLEN - Revised Edition by Leonard Maltin Leonard Maltin surveys the 20th century's greatest comedy performers to see what made each one unique. Drawing on his own observations as well as interviews with directors who worked with these stars, he presents entertaining profiles of everyone from Charlie Chaplin, the genius who "did it all" to his modern-day counterpart Woody Allen, whose nebbish persona became as identifiable as Chaplin's Little Tramp. Along the way you'll learn about pioneering comedienne Mabel Normand, sexual provocateur Mae West (who wrote her own saucy material), "iron man" Buster Keaton, the madcap Marx Brothers, the relentlessly rowdy Three Stooges, and many, many more. Maltin has revised his chapters (and filmographies) on Bob Hope, Jerry Lewis, and Woody Allen to bring this acclaimed 1978 book up to date. What's more, he's added some rare, new photos to the already-impressive gallery of images. If you love comedy, you'll enjoy this celebratory volume.

Reclusive American actor Randolph Scott, known for his subtle, dignified performances in almost 60 westerns, has been called the “most genuine Westerner.” His career began in 1928 with the first of several bit parts; his first starring role was 1932’s Heritage of the Desert. He fought in World War I, studying horsemanship, shooting, and bayoneting, and acted in a variety of films in every genre from musical to swashbuckler. His final film was Ride the High Country (1962). Chronologically arranged from his birth in 1898 to his death in 1987, this book covers every film in which Randolph Scott acted. Each section begins with a biographical chapter and then lists Scott’s films from that period: each film’s entry has filmographic information, a synopsis, and detailed commentary, discussing such topics as the financial aspects, production details, acting, other participants, anecdotes, and critical responses. Quotes from interviews with figures in the industry and published reviews bolster the entries. A bibliographical essay completes the work, which is heavily illustrated with stills and promotional materials.
