Auf ihn, den negativen Schritt ins Metaphysische, kann ein Denken, das kritisch sein möchte, nicht verzichten. Seine »rationalistische Einstellung« zur erfahrbaren Wirklichkeit bliebe ohne jenen Schritt sachlich unmotiviert: sie würde unverbindlich – reduziert auf eine Weltanschauung, die in allen Entschlüssen – so Popper – »eine gewisse Priorität des Irrationalismus anerkennt«.
