"Seconds passed; minutes. She could hear movement now in the waiting room she had just left...it was the metal magazine rack she was sure, that crashed to the tile floor. Then quiet. She strained to hear in the darkness. Nothing more, and then... The air moved in the room and she knew. He was here." As a young psychology student, Hailey Dean's world explodes when Will, her fianc, is murdered just weeks before their wedding. Reeling, she fights back the only way she knows how: In court, prosecuting violent crime...putting away the bad guys one rapist, doper, and killer at a time. But dedicating her life to justice takes a toll after years of courtroom battles and the endless tide of victims calling out from crime scene photos and autopsy tables. Just as she grows truly weary, a serial killer unlike any other she's encountered begins to stalk the city of Atlanta, targeting young prostitutes, each horrific murder bearing his own unique mark. This courtroom battle will be her last. Hailey heads for Manhattan to pick up the pieces of the life she had before Will's murder, training as a therapist. In a vibrant new world, she finally leaves her ghosts behind. But then her own clients are brutally murdered one by one by a copycat using the same M.O. as the Atlanta killer she hunted down years before. As the body count rises across Manhattan, Hailey is forced to match wits not only against a killer, but the famed NYPD. Unless she returns to her former life and solves the case, still more innocent people will die at the hands of a killer who plans to get her, before she can get him!

Why can't Philadelphia mob boss Carmine Baldasano get a mob lawyer - or any lawyer - to represent him in a case where he is charged with the vicious murder of a prostitute? John Bell becomes his fourth court-appointed attorney. Each of the former attorneys withdrew from the case, giving the judge lame excused for doing so. Judge Stanford Parker summarily drafts Bell to represent Baldasano and places Bell on an unrealistically short trial schedule. Judge Parker's courtroom demeanor makes him look like a co-prosecutor with Radcliff Bogan. the ruthless and determined assistant district attorney. Bell puts off preparing the case for trial because he is invited by a lawyer he knows only casually to take part in a drug case where there are several defendants and he will be only one of many experienced lawyers. He can't resist the promise of easy and substantial money with a minimum of effort. Joining the other defendants' lawyers led by well-known mob lawyer Augie DiGuilio in several trips to the Atlantic City casinos, Bell meets Connie Lascalzo, a red-haired, green-eyed bombshell and former showgirl. At the crap tables she displays a delightful sense of humor, a skilled hand at craps and, later, seductive dance talents. Bell shortly finds himself in bed with her. Serious obstacles impede Bell's preparation for trial. The trial date is advanced without prior notice to Bell; his investigator is the victim of a suspicious, disabling hit-and-run accident which makes him unavailable; and the lives of Bell's young daughters are threatened as the trial is about to begin. Bell is outraged and ashamed when he discovers he has been an unwitting player in an insidious plot to murder Baldasano in the courtroom. Bell finds himself squarely between competing mob families and quickly realizes Baldasano's enemies are using the criminal justice system to disgrace him and assure that he gets the death penalty. It takes all of Bell's self-discipline and ingenuity as he belatedly tries to make up for lost time in preparing for trial. There is a fascinating series of twists and turns and courtroom surprises as he attempts to rescue his client whom he now believes to be innocent. This book is designed to be read in its entirety on any coast-to-coast airline flight or any international flight.

The Mysterious Affair at Styles is a detective novel by Agatha Christie. Styles was Christie's first published novel. It introduced Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp, and Arthur Hastings. Poirot, a Belgian refugee of the Great War, is settling in England near the home of Emily Inglethorp, who helped him to his new life. His friend Hastings arrives as a guest at her home. When the woman is killed, Poirot uses his detective skills to solve the mystery. This is also the setting of Curtain, Poirot's last case. The book includes maps of the house, the murder scene, and a drawing of a fragment of a will. The true first publication of the novel was as a weekly serial in the The Times, including the maps of the house and other illustrations included in the book. This novel was one of the first ten books published by Penguin Books when it began in 1935. This first mystery novel by Agatha Christie was well received by reviewers. An analysis in 1990 was positive about the plot, considered the novel one of the few by Christie that is well-anchored in time and place, a story that knows it describes the end of an era, and mentions that the plot is clever. Christie had not mastered cleverness in her first novel, as "too many clues tend to cancel each other out"; this was judged a difficulty "which Conan Doyle never satisfactorily overcame, but which Christie would."

Every day six people in the United States are murdered by spouses or intimate partners. The stories of killer spouses tend to captivate us, as they beg the question of how so many seemingly normal and happy people manage to go over the edge. Indeed, every relationship presents "extreme moments" where scary feelings surface, yet what happens when those feelings turn to action? In Till Death Do Us Part, noted psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig, along with journalist Matt Birkbeck, presents the psychological profiles of notorious killer spouses -- from Scott Peterson and Clara Harris to Rabbi Fred Neulander and Betty Broderick. Ludwig reveals ten killer personality types. These ten personality types are defined in detail and illustrated with examples from high-profile cases along with in-depth analyses of the motivations behind the murders. The ten types range from the Betrayal/Abandonment Killer (who loses control and kills from a broken heart) to the Control Killer (who micromanages every aspect of the spouse's life) and the Black Widow/Profit Killer (who kills for money). With gripping stories and probing insight, authors Ludwig and Birkbeck examine the concept of peaceful versus violent resolution and why certain spouses believe murder is the best and only response. In an age when spousal murder is headline news, Till Death Do Us Part explores a phenomenon that many spouses can't help but think about at some point in their relationships -- which sheds light on the very notion of "happily ever after."
