History education, by nature, transmits an ‘official’ version of national identity. National identity is not a fixed entity, and?controversy over history teaching is an essential part of the process of redefining and regenerating the nation. France and the United States have in particular experienced demographic and cultural shifts since the 1960s that have resulted in intense debates over national identity. This volume examines how each country’s national history is represented in primary schools’ social studies textbooks and curricula, and how they handle contemporary issues of ethnicity, diversity, gender, socio-economic inequality, and patriotism. By analyzing each country separately and comparatively, it demonstrates how various groups (including academics, politicians and citizen activists) have influenced education, and how the process of writing and rewriting history perpetuates a nation. Drawing on empirical studies of the United States and France, this volume provides insight into broader nationalist processes and instructive principles for similar countries in the modern world.

Grounded in a critical sociocultural approach, this volume examines issues associated with teaching and learning difficult histories in international contexts. Defined as representations of past violence and oppression, difficult histories are contested and can evoke emotional, often painful, responses in the present. Teaching and learning these histories is contentious yet necessary for increased dialogue within conflict-ridden societies, reconciliation in post-conflict societies, and greater social cohesion in long-standing democratic nations. Focusing on locations and populations across the globe, chapter authors investigate how key themes—including culture, identity, collective memory, emotion, and multi-perspectivity, historical consciousness, distance, and amnesia—inform the teaching and learning of difficult histories.

Globalization is the most common overriding characteristic of our time, with societies all over the world struggling to change their educational systems to meet what are perceived to be the needs of globalization. This book provides an insider's account of how the Japanese educational system is trying to meet that challenge while placing the developments in a larger international context. Distinguishing itself from other books in the same genre, this volume (1) brings in the diversity of insiders‘ reactions concerning globalization reform in education, while placing such actions in the larger international context, and (2) covers a wide span of education (elementary to higher education) and shows how the globalization reforms as a whole are affecting Japanese education. With a focus on insiders’ accounts, this book brings in information that is little known outside of Japan. It also links globalization processes in Japanese society, school education and higher education, accounting for similarities and differences across educational levels, providing insight into the multifaceted processes affecting the Japanese education system. Chapters include: From High School Abroad to College in Japan: The Difficulties of the Japanese Returnee Experience The University of Tokyo PEAK Program: Venues into the Challenges Faced by Japanese Universities Why Does Cultural Diversity Matter? Korean Higher Education in Comparative Perspective

Learner-centered approaches to teaching, such as small group discussions, debates, role plays and project-based assignments, help students develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills. However, more traditional lecture-based approaches still predominate in classrooms in higher education institutions around the world. Faculty development programs can support faculty members to adopt new teaching methods, even in situations where they face significant challenges due to lack of resources, on-going conflict, political upheaval, or the legacy of colonialism in their educational systems. This volume presents research and practice on faculty development for improving teaching in developing countries. Based on the concept that "we teach as we were taught," the case studies in this volume describe ways to organize professional development to help higher education faculty members shift from lecture-based to active learning teaching for students who will become the next generation of teachers, practitioners, professionals and policymakers in their respective countries.

Equity, Opportunity and Education in Postcolonial Southeast Asia addresses the ways in which colonial histories, nationalist impulses and forces of globalization shape equity and access to education in Southeast Asia. Although increasingly identified as a regional grouping (ASEAN), Malaysia, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines are known for their vastly different state structures, political regimes, political economies and ethnocultural and religious demography. The expert contributors to this volume investigate educational access and equity for citizens, ethnic and religious minorities, and indigenous people within these countries. The subject of education is framed within the broader national and local challenges of achieving equity and social justice. This book examines the dimensions of (post)colonialism, nationalism, and globalisation as played out within different international educational contexts. Chapters include: Understanding the Cultural Politics of Southeast Asian Education through Postcolonial Theory Downplaying Difference: Representations of Diversity in Contemporary Burmese Schools and Educational Equity Learner Centered Pedagogy in Post-Conflict Timor-Leste: For the Benefit of the Learner or the Learned Technology of Dominance, Technology of Liberation: Education in Colonial and Postcolonial Cambodia Change and Continuity in the History of Vietnamese Higher Education Colonization by Stealth: The Case of Thailand Education Politics in Postcolonial Malaysia: Ethnicity, Difference and Inequalities The Singapore Education Journey: From Colonialism to Globalism
