In einem Exkurs werden eine etymologische und linguistische Analyse vollzogen. Desweitern wird im ersten Teil der Arbeit untersucht, in welchen Bereichen der Minimalismus Einzug hielt und welche Querverbindungen sich zu anderen Kunstbereichen ziehen lassen. Im Einzelnen werden Facetten der Kunst, des Tanzes, der Literatur und der bildenden Kunst naher beleuchtet, um einen Gesamtzusammenhang herstellen zu konnen und eine generelle Tendenz der 60er/70er Jahre aufzuzeigen. Wenngleich sich die meisten Bereiche unabhangig voneinander entwickelten, scheinen sie ein verbindendes Element zu haben, das seinen Ursprung offenbar in der Asthetik der Minimal Music" hat. Weiterhin wird im zweiten Teil die Thematik unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Notwendigkeit betrachtet, also die Frage gestellt, was genau zu der Entwicklung der Minimal Music" gefuhrt hat. Im Einzelnen: Worin bestand die Notwendigkeit des Einzugs des Minimalismus in die Musik, wie genau vollzog sich die Entwicklung, und durch welche Einflusse wurde sie begunstigt.
