From the man known as the father of the Harlem Renaissance comes a powerful, provocative, and affecting anthology of writers who shaped the Harlem Renaissance movement and who help us to consider the evolution of the African American in society. With stunning works by seminal black voices such as Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, and W.E.B. DuBois, Locke has constructed a vivid look at the new negro, the changing African American finding his place in the ever shifting sociocultural landscape that was 1920s America. With poetry, prose, and nonfiction essays, this collection is widely praised for its literary strength as well as its historical coverage of a monumental and fascinating time in the history of America.

Forest Park Highlands was once St. Louis's largest and best-known amusement park. In its earliest years, the Highlands boasted a fine theater and one of the largest public swimming pools in the United States. After the 1904 world's fair closed, several attractions found a new home at the Highlands; the large pagoda--a re-creation of the temple of Nekko, Japan--served as the park's bandstand for several years. Roller coasters are the lifeline of every good amusement park, and the Highlands always had two. The end came for the Highlands in a spectacular fire that decimated almost the entire park on July 19, 1963. Only the Comet roller coaster, the Ferris wheel, the Dodgems, the carousel, and the Aero Jets survived. Forest Park Highlands covers other historic amusement parks in St. Louis as well, starting with the earliest, West End Heights, and ending with Holiday Hill, the last remaining park.

Life had not been kind to young Tommy Riggs—and even though he had all the natural playing ability to become a Major Leaguer, his anger at the world kept him from becoming the great player he could be. How Tommy Riggs learned not only to be a star catcher, but also to live with himself and his teammates, makes a suspenseful story filled with the true-to-life color of baseball from the Minor Leagues through the bitter competition of spring training camp to top flight baseball as it is played in the Major Leagues. It is a story every sports fan will enjoy. LAWRENCE “YOGI” BERRA was probably the one man best able to tell sports fans how to play BEHIND THE PLATE and how it feels to be a catcher. His unequaled career with the New York Yankees won him a place as one of the all-time greats. In the words of Casey Stengel, “Outside of DiMaggio, the man behind the plate, Berra, is the greatest player that I ever had to manage.” TIL FERDENZI had a completely rounded sports background that made him the perfect collaborator for “Yogi” on this book. A six-letter varsity baseball and football athlete at Boston College—a former high school coach of baseball and football—and for sportswriter for the New York Journal-American, he helped bring baseball alive for sports fans in BEHIND THE PLATE.

I will ever be grateful for the almost psychic gift that enabled me to write Blithe Spirit in five days during one of the darkest years of the war.' Written in 1941, Blithe Spirit remained the longest-running comedy in British Theatre for three decades thereafter. Plotted around the central role of one of Coward's best loved characters, a spirit medium Madame Arcati (originally performed by Margaret Rutherford) Coward's play is an escapist comedy about a man whose two previous wives return to haunt him.
