Schon seit langem sieht Prasident Mugabe in ihnen schlichtweg Terroristen. In einer Regierungszeitung liess er sechs Journalisten offentlich und namentlich als solche diffamieren. Internationale Journalisten durfen nicht einreisen und werden auch nicht lizenziert. Dennoch wird der freien Presse ein entscheidender Einfluss auf das Wahlergebnis 2002 zugesprochen. Die Wahlen waren weder frei noch fair, trotzdem gewann Mugabe nur knapp und wahrscheinlich nur wegen der Manipulationen. Die Untersuchung konnte feststellen, dass die Medien in der Entwicklung Zimbabwes trotz zunehmender Einflussnahme durch die Politik eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Auch wenn die Presse in den 80er Jahre nur begrenzt frei war, konnte sie wie beim Willowgateskandal in einigen Fallen zumindest kurzfristig die politische Entwicklung beeinflussen. Obwohl der Medienmarkt mittlerweile unter starker staatlicher Kontrolle steht hat sich ein vielfaltiger Medienmarkt entwickelt, der trotz ausserst schwieriger Arbeitsbedingungen einen wichtigen Beitrag zur offentlichen Meinungsbildung leistet. Neben vielen unabhangigen Printmedien gibt es einige Horfunkmedien, die eine fehlende Lizenzierung durch Ubertragungen aus dem Ausland umgehen. Die Regierung Mugabe kann sich dem Einfluss der Medien nicht entziehen. Die Medien in Zimbabwe haben einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Demokratisierung des Landes geleistet und konnen eine kontroverse gesellschaftliche Diskussion uber politische Pluralitat weiter fordern.
