As John Donne said, and Hemingway repeated, "No man is an island." Sometimes it takes a crisis for people to accept that truth. For the Keller family, the lesson evolves from a deer hunt which forces them to confront secrets that have separated them from one another and the truth for years. Why did Jake Keller rebel and decide he needed one last deer hunt? Why had Andy, his son, suddenly quit hunting? Who was responsible for the death of Andy's younger brother, Paul, and why had Paul broken the old man's rule against drinking on a hunt? Why had Janet, Andy's wife, laughed hysterically at Paul's funeral? What was the source of the enmity between Jake and his boyhood friend, Clyde Grumbine? Why did everyone in the valley fear the black buck and why did it seem to haunt the Keller family?

It's the summer of 1898. The nation, just coming out of an economic slump, has been at war with Spain since April. Sylvester Tilghman, sheriff of Arahpot, Jordan County, Pennsylvania, and his friend, Dr. Hiram Mariner are called to Reliance Colliery, which is owned by Nathan Zimmerman, the new burgess of Arahpot. Five miners have been trapped overnight by a cave-in. When rescuers broke through, Willis Petry was discovered dead and Claude Kessler was standing over him with a knife in hand. Tilghman is informed there was bad blood between the two men. Kessler swears he didn¿t kill Petry. Examination reveals the victim wasn¿t stabbed. He ingested ground glass, which is found in remnants of sandwiches in his lunch pail. But Mariner determines cause of death was spice cake laced with cowbane, a poisonous plant. Petry had married a widow with two children, a surly teen and a mute child. Suspicion, naturally, falls on the widow. The stepdaughter confesses she put the glass in the sandwich because she didn't like the man's treatment of her mother (there's another, darker reason for her act). But both deny putting any spice cake in Petry's lunch. Petry is a man with a checkered past. Tilghman learns he had been a pimp previously and was currently operating a gambling den on the side. Kessler declines to explain the bad blood between him and Petry. He admits to gambling with Petry, but has always come out on the winning side. Syl¿s life is further complicated when a band of German gypsies, known in Pennsylvania as Chi-kaners, arrive and seek his help. Contrary to the myth of gypsies stealing children, they claim one of their young women was stolen by a goryo (non-gypsy). His name? Willis Petry. Add in threats to Syl's job by the manipulations of McLean Ruppenthal, the former burgess; a run in with a female horse thief; the murder of a local barber; scary predictions by a gypsy fortuneteller; the shooting of Deputy Cyrus Gutshall after he successfully competes in a July 4 foot-race, and a cross country chase after the villain steals Doc's new motorcar. There's plenty of good eating, church-going and socializing along the way. And, before all is over, Sylvester may come closer to his goal of finally marrying longtime girlfriend Lydia Longlow.

Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.

Nanoparticles are considered to be the building blocks for nanotechnology and are referred to as the particles having more than one dimension of the order of 100 nm or less. The nanostructured materials are being offered as better built, long lasting, cleaner, safer, and smarter products for use in communications, medicine, transportation, agriculture and other industries. Topics in molecular recognition, biomolecule-nanocrystal conjugates as fluorescence label for biological cells, and DNA-mediated groupings of nanocrystals are widespread, intriguing researchers from both biological and engineering fields. The diversity of nanotechnology covers fields from biology to material science, physics to chemistry, and other fields with variety of specialties. Controlled size, shape, composition, crystallinity, and structure-dependent properties of nanoparticles govern the unique properties of nanotechnology. The controlled biosynthesis of nanoparticles is of high scientific and technological interest as the microorganisms grab target ions from their environment and then turn the metal ions into the element metal through enzymatic mechanism generated through their cellular (Intra/ Extra) activities. The project aims to introduce the basics and advancements made so far in the field of biosynthesis of nanoparticles for graduate students and researchers around the world. The main aims are to (a) introduce the reader to the variety of microorganisms and their ability to synthesize the nanoparticles, (b) provide an overview of the methodologies applied to biosynthesize the variety of nanoparticles of medical and commercial uses, (c) provide a literature review on diversity of microorganisms able to synthesize nanoparticles of different types, (d) to discuss the regulatory mechanisms in microorganism able to synthesize variety of nanoparticles, (e) discuss experimental design problems associated with the controlled biosynthesis of nanoparticles, (f) discuss the stability and toxicity of nanoparticles in varying environment towards their therapeutic implications. The regulations, challenges and implications of biosynthesized nanoparticles for commercial significance will also represent among the main sections of the book. These aims will be organized by invited research/ review articles from renowned researchers exploring biosynthesis of variety of nanoparticles, and differ in length and number of chapters, with the literature review section containing the bulk of the text.

This book discusses the most important practical aspects involved in providing multidisciplinary Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) services for cancer patients. It draws on international experience in several continents of establishing and running such services and provides a contemporary, practical approach to AYA care based on accumulated experience. It is of interest to those establishing or seeking to improve AYA services as well as those already caring for AYA cance patients. Among topics discussed are incidence trends and treatment pathways, access to clinical trials for adolescents, transition from pediatric to adult services, psychological support and social care as well as survivorship and fertility. This book is of value of those establishing new services, those developing an existing service and those whose work includes the care of AYA patients. It is an important companion for pediatricians, oncologists as well as other medical, nursing and allied health professionals caring for Adolescents and Yound Adults with cancer.
