This charming novel about a Bengali-American matchmaker in San Francisco who creates an imaginary fiancé in order to satisfy her marriage-minded traditional parents offers a fresh variation on the timeless theme of a young woman's quest for true love. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Lina Ray has a knack for pairing up perfect couples as a professional matchmaker in San Francisco, but her well-meaning, highly traditional Indian family wants her to get married. When her Auntie Kiki introduces Lina to the bachelor from hell at her sister's wedding in India, Lina panics and blurts out, "I'm engaged!" Because what's the harm in a little lie? Who's sari now? Lina scrambles to find a real fiancé because Auntie Kiki will be coming to America soon to approve the match. But date after disastrous date gets her no closer to her prince -- until an actual prince arrives on her doorstep. Lina hasn't been able to stop fantasizing about traditional but dashing Raja Prasad since she met him in India. In fact, her imaginary fiancé has begun to resemble him! Now Raja is in San Francisco and wants Lina to find a suitable bride for his brother. Though they live oceans apart, Lina longs to bridge the gap. But when her fantastic fib catches up with her, life is suddenly like a Bollywood flick gone horribly wrong. Lina may have an over-developed fantasy life, but she certainly never imagined things would turn out like this!

REVIEWS 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect summer read!!!!, July 31, 2012 By Lyrical Days This review is from: The Guestbook (Paperback) I honestly did not know what to expect with this book, but what an exciting surprise! The Guestbook by Andrea Hurst is jam packed with hidden treasures along with a compelling story. The descriptions of the flowers, the mountains, the sky, the animals, and the FOOD were poetic and made me feel like I could actually smell and taste the foods, or feel the nature around me. I personally love Lilly's story of recovery after a bad marriage. She is strong, creative, and an inspiration to all women who have to restart their lives. I am recommending it to all of my friends. Hopefully this will become a series because I miss the island and the brownies already!!!

Heartwarming and Heart-Opening Stories Gathered from Decades of Medical Practice Bernie Siegel first wrote about miracles when he was a practicing surgeon and founded Exceptional Cancer Patients, a groundbreaking synthesis of group, individual, dream, and art therapy that provided patients with a “carefrontation.” Compiled during his more than thirty years of practice, speaking, and teaching, the stories in these pages are riveting, warm, and belief expanding. Their subjects include a girl whose baby brother helped her overcome anorexia, a woman whose cancer helped her heal by teaching her to stand up for herself, and a family that was saved from a burning house by bats. Without diminishing the reality of pain and hardship, the stories show real people turning crisis into blessing by responding to adversity in ways that empower and heal. They demonstrate what we are capable of and show us that we can achieve miracles as we confront life’s difficulties.

Enlightenment doesn't always come in the form we expect. It need not appear as a self-styled guru or a complicated theory measuring some mysterious quality. Sometimes it's as close as the chocolate Lab bounding happily through the backyard or the lovable terrier contentedly curled up in one's lap. In the foreword to this thoughtful examination of enlightenment, Dr. Bernie Siegel sums it up: “Dogs are healers. They are enlightened. They seem to have figured out how to live beautifully so much better than we humans have.” In these pages, distinctive black-and-white dog images by acclaimed animal photographer Zachary Folk are illuminated by captions of down-to-earth spiritual wisdom “from” the dogs to us, their often confused humans. A delightful romp through canine philosophy, this charming collection celebrates the simple wisdom and that special combination of natural earthiness and subtle spirituality that characterize humankind's best friend.
