The Shocking True Crime Stories of the 12 Worst Serial Killers in American History David Berkowitz: Known as the "Son of Sam," Berkowitz was a deeply disturbed young man who prowled the streets of New York dispensing death with his .44 caliber revolver. William Bonin: One of a trio of deadly psychopaths who trawled the freeways of Southern California during the late 70's and early 80's. Bonin was a depraved child killer who abducted, raped and tortured more than 20 teenaged boys. The Boston Strangler: Albert De Salvo took the fall but most experts agree that he was not the Strangler. So who was the real killer? And how did he get away with the series of brutal murders that so terrified the citizens of Boston? Ted Bundy: Charming, intelligent and lethal, Bundy is America's most notorious serial killer, a deadly fiend who cut a swathe of destruction across the country, raping, killing and committing necrophilia on his young victims. Dean Corll: Along with two willing teenaged accomplices, Corll orchestrated what was at the time the biggest murder spree in American history, raping torturing and killing at least 25 young boys. Jeffrey Dahmer: Hideously depraved killer who preyed on young homosexual men in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, cannibalizing them and conducting bizarre experiments on their bodies. Albert Fish: He looked like a frail old man, but Albert Fish was actually a psychotic child killer and torturer, with a taste for human flesh. John Wayne Gacy: Cold-hearted killer who raped, tortured and strangled at least 33 young men, burying their bodies in the crawlspace of his Chicago house. Randy Kraft: The least well known of California's three "Freeway Killers." And yet Kraft was both the most prolific and the most depraved, responsible for the torture killings of as many as 67 young men. Dennis Rader: Known as the "BTK Killer" (after his M.O.: Bind, Torture, Kill) Radar held the citizens of Wichita, Kansas in a state of fear for over 30 years, during which time he claimed 10 known victims. Richard Ramirez: A satanic burglar who went by the terrifying sobriquet, "The Night Stalker," Ramirez raped, battered, shot and stabbed his victims during a bloody reign of terror in 1980's Los Angeles. Gary Ridgeway: As the horrific "Green River Killer," Ridgeway engaged the Washington police in a deadly game of cat and mouse, claiming more that 60 victims over two decades. Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday—such are the legendary names that spring to mind when we think of the western gunfighter. But in the American West of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, thousands of grassroots gunfighters straddled both sides of the law without hesitation. Deadly Dozen tells the story of twelve infamous gunfighters, feared in their own times but almost forgotten today. Now, noted historian Robert K. DeArment has compiled the stories of these obscure men. DeArment, a life-long student of law and lawlessness in the West, has combed court records, frontier newspapers, and other references to craft twelve complete biographical portraits. The combined stories of Deadly Dozen offer an intensive look into the lives of imposing figures who in their own ways shaped the legendary Old West. More than a collective biography of dangerous gunfighters, Deadly Dozen also functions as a social history of the gunfighter culture of the post-Civil War frontier West. As Walter Noble Burns did for Billy the Kid in 1926 and Stuart N. Lake for Wyatt Earp in 1931, DeArment—himself a talented writer—brings these figures from the Old West to life. John Bull, Pat Desmond, Mart Duggan, Milt Yarberry, Dan Tucker, George Goodell, Bill Standifer, Charley Perry, Barney Riggs, Dan Bogan, Dave Kemp, and Jeff Kidder are the twelve dangerous men that Robert K. DeArment studies in Deadly Dozen: Twelve Forgotten Gunfighters of the Old West.

WITH 15 PHOTOS Chris Dorner was a cop with the LAPD who was fired after reporting that his training officer beat up a handcuffed, non-resisting suspect. He appealed. Lost. Then snapped. In his manifesto that he posted on Facebook, he vowed to kill those associated with him being fired as well as their families. His first victims were the daughter of the LAPD lawyer who represented him and her fiance. This recent case from 2013 includes several pictures, some of which are quite graphic, including the all-out manhunt for Dorner and his controversial death. Did the LAPD blow the whole scenario way out of proportion. Keeping in mind the fact that the LAPD is one of the most militarized police forces in America, one man's attempts to clear his name should not have sent the whole LAPD into the frenzy that it went into after Dorner's manifesto and statement came to light. Los Angeles has its share of some of the world's most ruthless and well-armed crime rings. These include, The Crips, Bloods, Mexican Mafia, Yakuza, Armenian Mob,Aryan Brotherhood, Skinheads, and Russian mobs as well as the local drug cartels. These gangs are not only real, they are openly hostile towards the LAPD and have killed numerous police officers on numerous occasions. Some of these gangs have even murdered entire families with the LAPD unable to catch them. Yet when an ex-cop, wanting to clear his name, tried to speak out against the LAPD, the police goes all out, 'balls to the wall', and embarked on one of the most organized and widespread manhunts in recent history. Additionally, newer reports regarding Monica Quan have arisen that render an even greater air of speculation to the whole ordeal. Monica Quan and her fiancé, both with law enforcement backgrounds, were found in a car that was parked in a parking garage in a million-dollar predominantly white neighborhood. The parking garage was being guarded by a police officer who did not see Dorner, a large black man, break in. The garages are monitored 24/7 and yet there is no footage of Dorner either breaking in, killing anyone, being there or leaving. Nothing. But that's what the LAPD wants people to believe.

There are many myths about serial killers: that they are all dysfunctional loners; all white males; only motivated by sex; that they all travel and operate across a wide area; cannot stop killing; are all insane, or evil geniuses; and that they all want to get caught. Of course, there are some serial killers who fit into these categories, but the married Green River Killer was not a dysfunctional loner; there are plenty of female and non-Caucasian serial killers; Dr Harold Shipman was certainly not motivated by sex; many serial killings (such as the Ipswich prostitute murders carried out by Steve Wright) happen within a confined area; the 'BTK Killer', Dennis Rader, stopped killing in 1991, but wasn't caught until fourteen years later. Many serial killers may have a low animal cunning, or be 'street smart', but few of them are Mensa-level geniuses. Each of the thirty cases covered here is unusual in some respect, perhaps in the way in which the killer carried out their crimes, the choice of victims, the way in which they were apprehended, or the method of their execution. The cases are presented alphabetically by country - from Australia via Colombia, Great Britain, Indonesia, Iran, South Africa and elsewhere to the United States - and then chronologically. They come from across history and from all over the world. The author has gone back as far as possible to contemporary source material - newspaper accounts, trial evidence, interviews with perpetrators or survivors - rather than rely on the increasingly blurred truth to be found online and in far too many collections.
