Many years ago, strong hands planted a tiny tree into the ground. Throughout the years, the tree grew and grew and became a wondrous sight. Its many branches offered shade in the summer and provided a home to birds and shelter to animals. It became known as the family tree with its branches representing each person in the family. One night a strong wind tore a branch from the family tree. The loving hands that planted the tree helped ease the feeling of loss by coming up with a creative plan for the broken branch. A picture book for all ages, The Family Tree shares an inspiring promise of hope in the aftermath of a storm.

An award-winning journalist’s voyage into her family history and her quest to face the storms she encounters there. In August Gale, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Barbara Walsh—who has interviewed killers, bad cops, and crooked politicians in the course of her career—faces the most challenging story of her lifetime: asking her father about his childhood pain. In the process, she takes us on two heartrending odysseys: one into a deadly Newfoundland hurricane and the lives of schooner fishermen who relied on God and the wind to carry them home; the other, into a squall stirred by a man with many secrets: a grandfather who remained a mystery until long after his death. Sixty-eight years after the hurricane that claimed several of her ancestors, Walsh searches for memories of the August gale and the grandfather who abandoned her dad as a young boy. Together, she and her father journey to Newfoundland to learn about the 1935 storm, and along the way her dad begins to talk about the man he cannot forgive. As she recreates the scenes of the violent hurricane and a small boy's tender past, she holds onto a hidden desire: to heal her father and redeem the grandfather she has never met.

Humans seemingly spring into existence out of nowhere with no explanations, no operations manuals, no "help menus", and no instructions or advice on what we are expected to do. The human species has had to start from scratch in trying to figure out what is going on, who we are, and what is the meaning of everything. Whereas the sciences try to understand how the world operates, and how we can effectively interact with it, philosophy is preoccupied with questions about the significance (meaning) of it all. This book is an introduction to philosophy.

Tracing my ancestry was challenging and painful—yet, exciting. I encountered learning experiences at my every turn, and had to climb over many a brick wall during my research. I must say that my persistent, tireless efforts to achieve my goal proved beneficial and rewarding. This book has been written not only to spark an interest in its reader for family research, but also to document my gratitude for those who struggled and weathered the emotional storms and endured to strengthen and secure our family ties. Unlike the famous writer Alex Haley, I was unable to link my ancestors to the country of Africa. The trace only led me to the state of Georgia. Our ancestors had many shades of color—from ivory to chestnut, dark brown, and ebony. Hair was all ways from kinky to straight to curly. Eyes ranged from blue to grey and brown. And noses as well as ears showed up little all the way to big. There were high cheekbones on some and round faces on others. Some were tall, some short. I attribute their many features to the Caucasian, Creek, Cherokee, Blackfoot Indian, and the African American bloodline. I must note that no legal references were uncovered to verify the location from which our ancestors migrated. Information concerning our surnames—Banks, Walker, Ross, Swift, and Lockett—I leave for the future generation to uncover. I give each of you my blessings, and I assure you your discoveries will be worth the challenge of doing the job. In this book you will witness my research and view my memory. I hope that as you read it you will learn new aspects of yourself.
