The Harvard Classics in 365 Days aims to provide a whirlwind tour of classic literature. By reading for just 15 minutes a day throughout the year, you can discover text from “twelve main divisions of knowledge” including History, Poetry, Natural Science, Philosophy, Biography, Prose Fiction, Criticism and the Essay, Education, Political Science, Drama, Voyages and Travel and Religion. Based on Dr. Eliot's “reading guide” for The Harvard Classics, a complete chapter of reading material is included for each day of the year (even February 29th, in case you are reading during a Leap Year): "These selections assigned for each day in the year as you will see, are introduced by comments on the author, the subjects or the chief characters. They will serve to introduce you in the most pleasant manner possible to the Harvard Classics. They will enable you to browse enjoyably among the world’s immortal writings with entertainment and stimulation in endless variety.." Each reading is framed by an introduction, a context in which the text can be read and understood, often with insightful information about the author, it's wider history, or why that particular selection is appropriate reading for that day.

Excerpt from The Harvard Classics, Vol. 19: Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, Faust, Part I; Egmont; Hermann and Dorothea; Christopher Marlowe, Doctor Faustus; With Introductions and Notes Johann wolfgang von goethe, the greatest of German men of letters, was born at frankfort-ou-the-main, August 28, 1749. His father was a man of means and position, and he personally supervised the early education of his son. The young Goethe studied at the universities of Leipsic and Strasburg, and in 1772 entered upon the practise of law at Wetzlar. At the' ih vitation of Karl August, Duke of saxe-weimar, he went in 1775 to live in Weimar, where he held a succession of political ofl'lces, becoming the Duke's chief adviser. from 1786 to 1788 he trav eled in Italy, and from 1791 to 1817 directed the ducal theater at Weimar. He took part in the wars against France, 1792-3, and in the following year began his friendship with Schiller, which lasted till the latter's death in 1805. In 1806 he married Christiane Vulpins. From about 1794 he devoted himself chiefly to literature, and after a life of extraordinary productiveness died at W cimar, March 22, 1832. The most important of Goethe's works produced before he went to Weimar were his tragedy Go'tz von Berlichingen which first brought him fame, and The Sorrows of Young W erther, a novel which obtained enormous popularity during the so-called Sturm und Drang periqd. During the years at Weimar before he knew Schiller he began Wilhelm M eister, wrote the dramas, Iphi genie, Egmont, and Torquato Tasso, and his Reinecke Fuchs. To the period of his friendship with Schiller belong the continuation of Wilhelm Meister, the beautiful idyl of Her mann and Dorothea, and the Roman Elegies. In the last period, between Schiller's death in 1805 and his own, appeared Faust, Elective A fiinities, his autobiographical Dichtung and Wahrheit (poetry and his Italian Journey, much scientific work, and a series of treatises on German Art. Translator name not noted above: Andrew Lang. Originally published between 1909 and 1917 under the name "Harvard Classics," this stupendous 51-volume set-a collection of the greatest writings from literature, philosophy, history, and mythology-was assembled by American academic CHARLES WILLIAM ELIOT (1834-1926), Harvard University's longest-serving president. Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XXII features a translation by Irish scholar SAMUEL HENRY BUTCHER (1850-1910) and Scottish academic ANDREW LANG (1844-1912) of the epic 8th-century BC Greek adventure The Odyssey, attributed to the poet Homer but originally told in oral form. The foundational text not merely of modern literature but of all of Western civilization, it is the story of the nine-year journey of the soldier Odysseus as he returns home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Nearly three thousand years after it was first written, it remains as entertaining as it is edifying, and it absolutely required reading for anyone who wishes to be considered truly educated and literate.

The New York Times «Μια απίστευτη σάτιρα για τη φυλετική ταυτότητα στην Αμερική... Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XXXI is considered one of the greatest autobiographies ever written, by Italian BENVENUTO CELLINI (1500-1571). Literally a Renaissance man, making a name for himself as an artist, soldier, and musician-his works are still readily found all over European museums and public places-he is perhaps most famous for his life story. Highly readable and hugely entertaining, it is replete with tales of illicit romance, murder, angelic visions, his own poisoning, and many other salacious affairs.
