Actual Malice is a true crime thriller that will take you through the backrooms of political gamesmanship, deception, and cover-up. If it were a novel, readers would marvel at the rich character development, riveting pace, and often-bizarre twists that make Actual Malice a compelling read. The fact that it is scrupulously documented nonfiction is sobering. If you know nothing about Gary Condit or the tragic death of Chandra Levy, there has never been a more engaging and thoughtful introduction to the sordid interplay between politicians, law enforcement, and the media. Actual Malice should be required reading for any public figure. If you followed the story of the murdered intern and the congressman driven from office by one of the most intense media cyclones in history, Actual Malice will challenge virtually everything you think you know. Breton Peace takes readers on a roller coaster ride through Congressman Condit's eyes, as corrupt and incompetent cops and a dark, insidious team of "scandal management" experts manipulate a willing press. To begin, Carolyn and Gary Condit had come an incredible distance together since setting out from Oklahoma for California where Gary and the Condit family name became synonymous with the Central Valley. In May of 2001, the moderate Blue Dog Democrats—of which Condit was a founding member—held significant power in Congress. Condit had used the coalition to deliver bipartisan victories in Bill Clinton's second term and was now flexing that muscle on the House Intelligence Committee. Condit accomplished what few of his generation could achieve—genuine political independence from both political machines. The sky was the limit. When Chandra Levy—a twenty-four-year-old Bureau of Prisons intern—disappeared in 2001, thewheels came off Gary’s ambitions. Accused of having an affair with Levy, a whirlwind of rumor, intrigue, and treachery surrounded him. More than a decade of lies, manipulation, and deception followed until, in 2016, the justice system cracked under the stress of its own spinelessness. Actual Malice chronicles in vivid detail the heartache and intrigue behind the salacious, if fanciful, headlines that too often drive public debate and derail the serious business of our nation and its system of justice.

It's the story of a lurid murder in San Francisco. The case of Jordan Alexander, the accused socialite, would have never gone to trial if district attorney Peter Granucci hadn't been preparing to run for mayor. Granucci chooses Destiny Mitchell, a young black woman, to prosecute Jordan, the mayor's best friend, in this difficult and highly publicized case. Jordan is accused of brutally murdering his wife in her Pacific Heights home. He denies any involvement and suggests his wife was murdered by black hoodlums. It is a case that no one, including Granucci, believes Destiny can win. The shocking conclusion comes 14 years later in a dramatic courtroom showdown. Disturbingly violent at times, sexy, racially-charged and full of intrigue, Legal Thriller is perfectly-set to be the next legal genre blockbuster.

She worked for one of the most powerful men in government--and she trusted him completely. That was her mistake. Praised as "a worthy rival of Scott Turow and John Grisham" (Chicago Tribune), Sabin Willett made a powerful debut with his legal thriller, The Deal. Now he's made the leap from the courthouse to the White House in an even more accomplished international thriller involving political corruption, multibillion-dollar deal making, kidnapping, and assassination. At the center of this fast-paced novel is a fascinating heroine: Louisa Shidler, a thirty-seven-year-old U.S. ambassador, mother, and convicted traitor. Betrayed by her husband, her government, and her powerful boss and mentor, she is abandoned by everyone except her daughter, Isabel. But when the girl is kidnapped, Louisa learns that there is no limit to betrayal's reach--and no limit to what one woman will do to survive it. As the action moves relentlessly from Washington, D.C., to Geneva, Switzerland, from Dubai to Paris to Cody, Wyoming, it becomes evident that Louisa and her daughter are mere pawns in an international bribery scheme of unprecedented proportions. But when the pawns refuse to fall, the bigger pieces begin to topple. Charged with political savvy, shrewd characterizations, and a tense, tightly constructed plot, The Betrayal is a thriller of the highest caliber that will further enhance Sabin Willett's growing reputation.

Political Ducks

You have what it takes to sit in this office. Youre on the launch pad, fueled and ready; Senator, start the countdown, says Republican President Bob Davids, now a lame duck, to ingratiate himself with Democrat Earl Eastwood, offering him a remarkable, unprecedented sharing of presidential authority. Eastwood, unknowingly recruited to redress the Presidents badly damaged image, would receive Davids blessing to bypass bungling federal investigators. He promised the young senator whatever it might take to find the perpetrators of a terrorist attack on Washington, which killed Eastwoods predecessor, the widely beloved Senator Bill Rice. Just two years ago, Eastwood, an African-American, was Connecticuts attorney general. He was appointed by Governor Domenic Guillermo to succeed Senator Bill Rice, killed by an assassins bullet at the instant a US Air Force F-16 fighter was downed by Washington-based defensive missiles, exploding over Rices head. The aircraft was on an angle of attack toward the US Capitol. Rice had been Eastwoods lifelong mentor, his meal ticket. He had managed Eastwoods appointment to West Point, entry to Yale Law School, court clerkship, Senate staff job, and designation as state attorney general. Senator Eastwood, with both a carte blanche from the President and surreptitiously provided Israeli intelligence, redirects a feckless federal inquiry to identify the perpetrators of the air attack, and Rices assassin. His success has a few political liabilities; but the rewards cast him onto the national political stage. Governor Guillermo appointed Eastwood to the senate, hoping he would promote his presidential aspirations. Eastwood is not consciously disloyal to Guillermo; rather, he is swept up by changing political winds. Terrorism moves to the top of the publics issue agenda for the presidential race. Eastwood catches the draft. But Guillermo remains mired in issues of fading significance. His gubernatorial re-election in 2006 is at risk. With typical guile, Davids makes a proposition to Eastwood. He would appoint Guillermo as ambassador to the Vatican. The deal included a corrupt arrangement with an Italian aviation firm, AviTalia, which had just won a contract to provide the White House Marine One helicopter. The appointment to the Vatican would gracefully remove Guillermo from his failing gubernatorial re-election, opening it to a Republican win but rescuing Eastwood from hostile state Democrats. Some were thinking a recall of Eastwood from the US Senate, believing his quick leap to fame, and a certain presidential nod for the 2008 race, had come at Guillermos expense. But Eastwood rejects involvement in Davids scheme; his high-minded image of the President shattered forever. Even Atlas shrugged, Eastwood thinks. The story tempts the genre of political thrillers. Washingtons decision-making machinery is portrayed with zealous accuracy. For the neo-realist, facts buttress good fiction. Political Ducks characters live the real hypocrisy and risks of the American political culture. Their pathology of political ambition confirms even the most pessimistic impressions of democracy.
