Die Prognosen für die Unionsparteien wichen im Mittel bei allen großen Instituten um mehr als sechs Prozentpunkte vom tatsächlichen Wahlergebnis ab – für eine Branche, die mit Zahlen handelt, nicht gerade ein Ruhmesblatt. Dabei waren die Wahlberechtigten doch im Vorfeld dieser Wahl fortwährend von den Meinungsforschungsinstituten zu ihren Wahlabsichten befragt worden. Kurz vor dem Urnengang schrieb die Zeit: Noch nie wurden vor einer Bundestagswahl so viele Umfragen veröffentlicht wie in diesem Sommer. Allensbach, Emnid, Forsa, Infratest und die Forschungsgruppe Wahlen fragen und forschen im Stundentakt. Wer ist der beliebteste Politiker im Land? Wem trauen Sie am ehesten zu, die Arbeitslosigkeit zu senken? Welche Partei würden sie wählen, wenn am nächsten Sonntag Bundestagswahl wäre? Kaum ein Tag vergeht ohne neue Zahlen. Und ohne neue Interpretationen. Für Abwechslung sorgen auf jeden Fall die Demoskopen. Sie sind einflussreich wie selten zuvor. Dieser tatsächliche oder vielleicht auch nur vermeintliche Einfluss bietet immer wieder Anlass zur Kritik an den Meinungsforschern. Im Vorfeld der vergangen Bundestagswahl 2005 stellte Bundeskanzler Schröder fest: ‚Irgendetwas ist falsch mit der Umfragerei’. Er zog das Fazit: An den schlechten Meinungsumfragen kann etwas nicht stimmen. An der Demoskopie scheiden sich seit jeher die Geister. Es ist schon fast ein Ritual, dass Meinungsumfragen vor Bundestagswahlen kritisiert werden. So sah vor der Bundestagswahl 1980 der SPD-Politiker Wischnewski die Gefahr von mehr oder minder offenen Manipulationsversuchen durch veröffentlichte Wahlumfragen, und vor der Wahl 1983 sprach der damalige CSU-Generalsekretär Stoiber von nach Manipulation riechenden demoskopischen Ergebnissen. Vor der Wahl 1990 warnte der SPD-Ehrenvorsitzende Brandt davor, sich durch demoskopische Prognosen verrückt machen zu lassen. Vier Jahre später übernahm dann Bundeskanzler Kohl die Rolle des Mahners und warnte vor den Tücken der Demoskopie, deren Indikatoren wechselten wie die Wasserstandsmeldungen vom Rhein, und 1998 gaben gleich mehrere CDU-Vorstandsmitglieder ihre Befürchtung zu erkennen, die Erfolgsaussichten der CDU könnten durch die Veröffentlichung von demoskopischen [...]
