Since the first edition of this book was published several new developments have been made in the field of the moiré theory. The most important of these concern new results that have recently been obtained on moiré effects between correlated aperiodic (or random) structures, a subject that was completely absent in the first edition, and which appears now for the first time in a second, separate volume. This also explains the change in the title of the present volume, which now includes the subtitle “Volume I: Periodic Layers”. This subtitle has been added to clearly distinguish the present volume from its new companion, which is subtitled “Volume II: Aperiodic Layers”. It should be noted, however, that the new subtitle of the present volume may be somewhat misleading, since this book also treats (in Chapters 10 and 11) moiré effects between repetitive layers, which are, in fact, geometric transformations of periodic layers, that are generally no longer periodic in themselves. The most suitable subtitle for the present volume would therefore have been “Periodic or Repetitive Layers”, but in the end we have decided on the shorter version.

When I was a student, in the early fifties, the properties of gratings were generally explained according to the scalar theory of optics. The grating formula (which pre dicts the diffraction angles for a given angle of incidence) was established, exper imentally verified, and intensively used as a source for textbook problems. Indeed those grating properties, we can call optical properties, were taught'in a satisfac tory manner and the students were able to clearly understand the diffraction and dispersion of light by gratings. On the other hand, little was said about the "energy properties", i. e. , about the prediction of efficiencies. Of course, the existence of the blaze effect was pointed out, but very frequently nothing else was taught about the efficiency curves. At most a good student had to know that, for an eche lette grating, the efficiency in a given order can approach unity insofar as the diffracted wave vector can be deduced from the incident one by a specular reflexion on the large facet. Actually this rule of thumb was generally sufficient to make good use of the optical gratings available about thirty years ago. Thanks to the spectacular improvements in grating manufacture after the end of the second world war, it became possible to obtain very good gratings with more and more lines per mm. Nowadays, in gratings used in the visible region, a spacing small er than half a micron is common.

" In this thesis, a number of new schemes are presented which address current problems and shortcomings within the area of visual cryptography. Visual cryptography provides a very powerful means by which a secret, in the form of a digital image, can be distributed (encoded) into two or more pieces known as shares. When these shares are xeroxed onto transparencies and superimposed exactly together, the original secret can be recovered (decoded) without the necessity for computation. Traditionally, visual cryptography allows effective and efficient sharing of a single secret between a number of trusted parties. One aspect of the research within this thesis specifically addresses the issues of embedding more than two secrets within a set of two shares. Alignment poses a further problem. The placement of the shares must be specific. In order to ease ali~ent, the techniques developed within this thesis for sharing multiple secrets relaxes this restriction. The result is a scheme in which the shares can be superimposed upon one another in a multitude of positions and alignment styles which enables multiple secret recovery. Applications of visual cryptography are also examined and presented. This is an area within visual cryptography that has had very little attention in terms of research. The primary focus of the work presented within this thesis concentrates on applications of visual cryptography in real world scenarios. For such a simple and effective method of sharing secrets, practical applications are as yet, limited. A number of novel uses for visual cryptography are presented that use theoretical techniques in a practical way.
