Borrowing Prospero's "rough magic" as a descriptor for his examination of the art and craft of teaching, Lindley sets out to heighten the awareness of experienced and novice teachers alike. He explores the teaching/learning process and how teachers' own feelings affect their work. A hands-on book, it uncovers the nature of what really happens in the teacher/student interaction in the classroom. Lindley emphasizes the practical: He makes use of his own teaching life, and that of others, as it exemplifies theoretical positions derived from studies of classroom teaching and analytical psychology (Jungian). In the process, he has created a book of value in re-energizing the in-service teacher and educating the pre-service teacher. Parents, administrators, anyone interested in the process of teaching will find the book fascinating and useful.

In The Development of Personality, C. G. Jung wrote, "In every adult there lurks a child--an eternal child, something that is always becoming, is never completed, and calls for unceasing care, attention, and education. That is the part of the human personality that wants to develop and become whole." In this reflection on life's journey, Daniel Lindley applies the insights gleaned from many years of study of literature and psychoanalysis to show how we are always becoming--and always obligated to care for that archetypal child. Drawing upon psychological truths expressed by Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Eliot, and others, Lindley illuminates the process of individuation through personal experience, art, and archetype. From birth to old age, he shows that, even in our separateness, we share an archetypal ground. According to the author, at any point in our lives, the path we walk is not unknown but has purpose and direction. We live out stories, which existed long before we did and will continue long after we are gone.

'A comfortable chair and a Mary Stewart: total heaven. I'd rather read her than most other authors.' Harriet Evans Lucy Waring, a young, out-of-work actress from London, leaps at the chance to visit her sister for a summer on the island paradise of Corfu, and what's more, a famous but reclusive actor is staying in a villa nearby. But Lucy's hopes for rest and romance are shattered when a body washes up on the beach and she finds herself swept up in a chilling chain of events. I shuddered, and drank my coffee, leaning back in my chair to gaze out across pine tops furry with gold towards the sparkling sea, and surrendering myself to the dreamlike feeling that marks the start of a holiday . . .

The changes in how we understand and study teaching and learning are uneven. Strongly held beliefs support the changes and equally strongly held beliefs challenge them. However, the discourse about teaching and learning and our understandings of the nature of educational research have changed rather dramatically in the last two decades. These changes form the context for the work described in this book on stories out of school-adult memories of their teachers. The authors have been guided by the work of Jackson (1992), Noddings (1992), Eisner (1998), Palmer (1998), Coles (1989), and Lindley (1993), among others, who have focused on the qualities of life experienced by children, particularly in the classroom. Interests have centered on memory, meaning, and the self in relationship. Using a database of letters written by adults (most of whom are teachers or are preparing to be teachers) to their former teachers, the authors examine the interpersonal spaces shared by teachers and students and the kinds of unacknowledged pedagogies created in those spaces. They are interested in the ethics of experienced pedagogies and the implications of those pedagogies for educating teachers.

"Despite author's claim that the relation of technology and the arts is a new topic, it was a major concern for the avant-garde as well as Walter Benjamin and W.T. Adorno. Nevertheless, the consideration of technology in the making of magic realism is innovative"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.

An inspiring biography of one of the most influential and beloved figures of the 21st century, based on more than a thousand interviews. "I've read every book that has ever been written about Walt Disney, going back to some that were published in the 1930s. [How to Be Like Walt] is by far the most enjoyable to read of them all!" Tim O'Day, Disney Scholar "How to Be Like Walt is a fitting tribute to Walt's memory and an important contribution to the Disney legacy . . . Now more than ever, we need people with the qualities Walt had: optimism, imagination, creativity, leadership, integrity, courage, boldness, perseverance, commitment to excellence, reverence for the past, hope for tomorrow, and faith in God." Art Linkletter How to Be Like is a "character biography" series: biographies that also draw out important lessons from the life of their subjects. In this new book-by far the most exhaustive in the series-Pat Williams tackles one of the most influential people in recent history. While many recent biographies of Walt Disney have reveled in the negative, this book takes an honest but positive look at the man behind the myth. For the first time, the book pulls together all the various strands of Disney's life into one straightforward, easy-to-read tale of imagination, perseverance, and optimism. Far from a preachy or oppressive tome, this book scrapes away the minutiae to capture the true magic of a brilliant maverick.
