Excerpt from A Physical Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 of 2 The demand for a Second Edition of this book came upon me a year ago, much sooner than I expected it. As my life is no longer that of a student, but is fully occupied by engineering work, time for writing has been scarce, and this book has been long out of print. Now that it is ready for the press, I can only, for the same reason, bespeak indulgence for it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism, Vol. 1 This work is based upon a course of Lectures delivered by one of us in the College de France in the last few years. It will comprise two parts: the first, which is principally theoretical, forms the present volume; the second, which will be more experimental in character, will be devoted to the examination of the various phenomena, the methods of measurement, and the principal applications. This method of treatment seemed to us to present great advantages. The phenomena are, in fact, almost always very complicated, especially in the case of electricity; and to understand all the details which these phenomena involve often requires a more extensive knowledge than that furnished in the chapters with which they are more immediately connected. The explanation of the experiments will, therefore, be materially facilitated by a preliminary account of the general principles of the science. After having stated and co-ordinated the facts which serve to establish the theory, we have investigated the mechanical consequences. This first volume forms, accordingly, a distinct work; and we might express the idea which has guided us by considering it as an Essay on the Mechanical Theory of Electricity, if such a title did not seem too ambitious. One of the greatest theoretical physicists of the 19th century, James Clerk Maxwell is best known for his studies of the electromagnetic field. The 101 scientific papers of this two-volume set, arranged chronologically, testify to Maxwell's profound scientific legacy and include the preliminary explorations that culminated in his most famous work, A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism. One of the nineteenth century's most significant papers, "A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field," appears here, along with similarly influential expositions of Maxwell's dynamical theory of gases. The author's extensive range of interests is well represented, from his discussions of color blindness and the composition of Saturn's rings to his essays on geometrical optics, ether, and protecting buildings from lightning. His less technical writings are featured as well, including items written for the Encyclopedia Britannica and Nature magazine, book reviews, and popular lectures. Striking in their originality, these papers offer a wealth of stimulating and inspiring reading to modern students of mathematics and physics.

The essays which make up this volume arise out of the author's ongoing engagement with the tension between Christian theology and the general frame of thought that has dominated European culture for several hundred years. The early Christian Church set about not only to communicate the Gospel to the Greco-Roman world but also to transform the prevailing mode of thought and culture so that the Gospel could take deep root and develop within it. Therefore, in every age, says Thomas F. Torrance, Òthe Christian faith must be brought to bear transformingly upon the whole frame of human culture, science, and philosophy.Ó
