Den Anlass zu dieser Themenwahl liefert die weltweit zögerliche Einführung des digitalen Kinos. In den Jahren 2002 und 2003 wurden viele umfangreiche Studien1 zum Potential und den Auswirkungen des digitalen Kinos auf die Filmwirtschaft veröffentlicht. Zeitgleich kündigten die großen Hollywood-Studios den Beginn eines digitalen Rollouts ab 2004, spätestens 2005 an. Im Herbst 2005 ist sowohl international wie auch national noch keine brancheninterne Einigung zum digitalen Roll-out in Sicht. Das renommierte Britische Marktforschungsinstitut Screen Digest betitelte eine seiner zahlreichen Studien zum digitales Kino Working towards digital cinema: Year 4 Limbo not launch . Der Titel zeigt nüchtern das ganze Dilemma der Situation auf. Es herrscht Stagnation innerhalb der Branche, statt Dynamik und Pioniergeist. Seit Definition der technischen Standards durch die Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) im Juli dieses Jahres, verhindert lediglich die ungeklärte Finanzierungsfrage eine flächendeckende Implementierung der digitalen Kinotechnik. Die Branchenvertreter fordern gegenseitig die Vorgabe eines schlüssigen Geschäftsmodells zur Lösung der Finanzierungsproblematik. Eine öffentliche Diskussion von möglichen Varianten findet seitens der Marktteilnehmer nicht statt. Die Hauptakteure der Digitalisierung, Verleiher und Kinobetreiber, äußern sich nicht konkret zu ihren Vorstellungen von einem Geschäftsmodell hinsichtlich der Finanzierungsbeteiligung und des möglichen Umsetzungsszenarios. Lediglich von Technikanbietern und Werbewirtschaft gibt es konkrete Vorschläge zur Durchführung der digitalen Umrüstung, die jedoch bisher nicht die breite Akzeptanz der Kinobetreiber und Verleiherverbände gefunden haben. Zudem behandeln fast alle wichtigen Branchentreffen seit über drei Jahren das digitale Kino als eines ihrer Schwerpunktthemen. Dazu gehören u.a. die Internationale Konferenz für Film- und Fernsehproduktion Babelsberg 2002, die Medienwoche Berlin-Brandenburg 2003 und ein Expertenseminar der MBA zur Berlinale 2004. Eine MBA-Veranstaltung am 1. September 2005 kündigte sogar schon Praxishilfe für den digitalen Kinoanwender an. Es wird viel veranstaltet und diskutiert.
