The only people who can save the Republic are Snow, her partner Veiko, and the highborn scout Dekklis. Together they mean to muster the power of the Senate and leverage the arcane knowledge of the Academy's Archives. Once in the city, however, they discover the situation is already dire. A rash of disappearances among highborn men and the resurgence of old heresies suggest that Tal'Shik's godsworn have already infiltrated the city. When Veiko is added to the ranks of the missing, Snow is done waiting. She brokers a deal with a rival god to get the power she needs to stop Tal'Shik. But Snow has never been good at making bargains, and this deal is going to cost her....

In this first of three volumes addressing Luther's outlaw God, Steven D. Paulson considers the two "monsters" of theology, as Luther calls them: evil and predestination. He explores how these produce fear of God but can also become the great and only comforts of conscience when a preacher arrives. Luther's new distinction between God as he is preached and God without any preacher absolutely frightened all of the schools of theology that preceded it, and for that matter all that followed Luther, as well. That fear coalesced in various opponents like Eck and Latomus, but in a special way in Desiderius Erasmus. For Paulson, bad theology begins with bad preaching, and since the church is what preaching does, bad preaching hides the church under such a dark blanket that it can hardly be detected. He argues that the primary distinction of naked/clothed or unpreached/preached radiates out in all directions for Luther's theology, and shows what difference this makes for current preaching. Specifically, Paulson takes up the central question of all theology (and life): What is God's relation to the law, and the law's relation to God? Luther's answers are surprising and will change the way you preach.

Ben Flood, marshall of the small town of Burnt Rock in post-Civil War Texas, comes face-to-face with an old nemesis when a marauding band of thieves robs the local bank. Zeb Stone, hardened and full of rage toward his arch enemy, kidnaps the strong-willed rancher Lee Morgan to lure the marshall into danger. Determined to re-create his first gunfight with Flood, Stone leads his pursuer through the parched desert of south Texas and into LaRosa, Mexico. Meanwhile Lee, an expert horsewoman, makes her escape and pairs up with Flood on his quest to settle the twenty-year feud. The marshall knows there will be no turning back, but he wonders-is this duel just part of his job, or has he allowed it to become a vendetta against the man who killed his father? What he discovers about himself, his faith, and his growing feelings for Lee will delight fans of romance and adventure alike. The Long Road to LaRosa is the second in a masterfully written western romance series and continues the fine standard set in the first release, Stallions at Burnt Rock, for memorable characters, a well-woven story, and vivid, true-to-life detail about life in the Wild West.
