"Political correctness" involves much more than a restriction of speech. It represents a broad cultural transformation, a shift in the way people understand things and organize their lives; a change in the way meaning is made. The problem addressed in this book is that, for reasons the author explores, some ways of making "meaning" support the creation and maintenance of organization, while others do not. Organizations are cultural products and rely upon psychological roots that go very deep. The basic premise of this book is that organizations are made up of the rules, common understandings, and obligations that "the father" represents, and which are given meaning in the oedipal dynamic. In anti-oedipal psychology, however, they are seen as locuses of deprivation and structures of oppression. Anti-oedipal meaning, then, is geared toward the destruction of organization.

It is my fervent hope that it finds a large readership in the leadership echelons of our society. Whoever reads it will have difficulty putting it down as, the content is gripping.'- Anton Obholzer, psychoanalyst and organisational consultant, formerly director, Tavistock Centre London'At a time when our world badly needs thinking that takes us out of our conventional boxes, these papers bravely and thoughtfully offer new perspectives on key problems. The authors gathered together in this important volume show how terrorism, war, financial crisis, and corporate irresponsibility gain much of their intractable power by drawing on unconscious motives and working through unseen mechanisms. They also help us to understand the extraordinary demands placed on our leaders.- Ken Eisold, former President, ISPSO; founding faculty and former Director, Organization Program, The William Alanson White Institute; award winning author of What You Dont Know You Know

This fascinating book, the last in a trilogy on psychoanalytic reflections, edited by Halina Brunning, explores power and vulnerability in three related areas: Leadership and Organizations, the Political Arena, and Global Finances. These thirteen essays, with a conclusion to the trilogy written by Jim Krantz, link psychoanalytic concepts with system psychodynamics. This provides a powerful way of analysing and understanding how the inner world of the individual is mobilised in relation to the group, the organisation, society and globally, from the perspective of the close interconnection between power and vulnerability. The papers in this volume describe how power and vulnerability are closely interlinked with infantile omnipotence and helplessness.

This book develops a psychoanalytic theory of political correctness and the pristine self, which is defined as a self touched by nothing but love. It explores the damage that political correctness can do to social order. Applications include the breakdown of social capital, the financial crisis, and Occupy Wall Street. Long an issue for conservatives, alarm over political correctness has now spread to the liberal side of the political spectrum. As Schwartz argues, all have reason to be concerned. The psychology that underlies political correctness has the potential to be extremely destructive to social organization on every level. Schwartz discusses the primitive roots of political correctness and, through the use of case studies, shows its capacity for ruination. The book focuses on a transformation in the idea of the self, and specifically the rise of the pristine self. The problem is that, in truth, the world does not love us. This puts the pristine self at war with objective reality.

The Encyclopedia contains over 158,000 cross-references between entries, an extensive 91,000 practical key term index, bibliographies, and full cross-referencing to the Yearbook of International Organizations.
