This book is divided into three main topical sections: (1) Parent-child construction of narrative, which focuses on aspects of the social interaction that facilitate oral narrative development in Spanish-speaking children; (2) Developing independent narration by Spanish-speaking children; and (3) Narrative links between Latino children's oral narration and their emergent literacy and other school achievements. Chinese Language Narration: Culture, cognition, and emotion is a collection of papers presenting original research on narration in Mandarin, especially as it contrasts to what is known regarding narration in English. One chapter addresses dinner table conversation between Chinese immigrant parents and children in the United States compared to non-immigrant peers. Other chapters consider evaluation patterns in Mandarin versus English, referencing strategies, coherence patterns, socioeconomic differences among Taiwanese Mandarin-speaking children, and differences in narration due to Specific Language Impairment and schizophrenia. Several chapters address developmental concerns. Distinctive aspects of narration in Mandarin are linked to larger issues of autobiographical memory. Mandarin is spoken by far more people than any other language, yet narration in this language has received notably less attention than narration in Western languages. The goal of The Oxford Handbook of African American Language is to provide readers with a wide range of analyses of both traditional and contemporary work on language use in African American communities in a broad collective. The Handbook offers a survey of language and its uses in African American communities from a wide range of contexts organized into seven sections: Origins and Historical Perspectives; Lects and Variation; Structure and Description; Child Language Acquisition and Development; Education; Language in Society; and Language and Identity. In industrialized countries, students' pathways through school to work have been described as an "academic pipeline." Democracies hold an ideal of access to educational opportunites by choice and advancement by merit, but in reality, as students move through primary and secondary school to college, the numbers of ethnic minority and low-income youth in the academic pipeline shrink. This special double issue addresses the academic pipeline problem by focusing on three key themes: (a) involving all families in their children's schooling; (b) identifying ways the academic pipeline can be kept open for diverse students; and (c) helping students bridge their worlds of families, peers, schools, and communities. This volume contributes to both policy and practice in local, state, and national settings where concerns for making diversity work are at the top of schools' and youth organizations' agendas.
