This book is an invitation to academic administrators, at every level, to engage in reflection on the ethical dimensions of their working lives. Academics are very good at reflecting on the ethical issues in other professions but not so interested in reflecting on those in their own, including those faced by faculty and administrators. Yet it is a topic of great importance. Academic institutions are value-driven; hence virtually every decision made by an academic administrator has an ethical component with implications for students, faculty, the institution, and the broader community. Despite this, they receive little systematic preparation for this aspect of their professional lives when they take up administrative posts, especially when compared to, say, medical or legal training. Surprisingly little has been written about the ethical challenges that academic administrators are likely to face. Most of the literature relating to academic administration focuses on “leadership” and draws heavily on management and social science theory. The importance of focusing on ethical deliberation and decision-making often goes unrecognized.

Research on the ethical decision-making processes of school administrators has received increased attention in the educational leadership literature (Roche, 1999 ; Begley, 201 ; Shapiro & Stefkovich, 2005 ; Norberg & Johansson, 2007 ; Langlois, 2004). This is partly due to studies which provide evidence that school administrators are increasingly driven in their decision-making processes by strategic motives rather than ethical considerations (Strike, Haller, & Soltis, 1998 ; Kirby, Paradise, & Protti, 1992 ; Campbell, 1997). Several studies also highlight the emergence of new challenges in contemporary society that give rise to more complex ethical issues in the school environment (Richmon, 2003 ; Ryan, 2003 ; Dempster & Berry, 2003). Other studies underscore the increasing number of groups that have a stake in schools due to school decentralization processes. This in turn makes decision-making more difficult as school leaders are expected to balance the varied and often competing interests of these stakeholders (Cranston, Ehrich & Kimber, 2003 ; Dempster & Berry, 2003). In all these studies, concerns have been raised regarding principals' ability to effectively handle and resolve the ethical dilemmas that arise in their work. These studies also suggest the need to equip educational leaders with the skills to be effective decision-makers through serious training and professional formation in ethics (Dempster & Berry, 2003). Although ethical-decision making in the context of educational administration has been extensively studied, most research have focused on principals working in secondary school settings while little is known on the ethical decision-making processes in the context of higher education. To date, most research on academic deans center on their profile, tasks, roles, and challenges (Wolverton, Gmelch, Montez, & Nies, 2001 ; De Boer & Goedebuure, 2009 ; Bray, 2008) but research on the ethical dimensions of their work as administrators have not been explored in a few conceptual studies (Weingartner, 2000 ; Englehardt, Pritchard, Romesburg, & Schrag, 201). Further, extant research on ethical decision-making involved school administrators working in North America, Europe, and Australia while there is a paucity of research about school administrators in Asia. IN the Philippine context, research on academic deanship remains largely unexplored except in a few studies that focus on deans' managerial and leadership styles (Undung & de Guzman, 2009 ; de Guzman & Hapan, 2013 ; de Guzman & Hapan, 2014). However, no research has been done in the Philippine setting on the moral dimension of academic administration, and specifically on the ethical-decision making processes of college deans. In order to address this gap, this paper explored how Filipino academic deans structure their ethical decision-making processes in solving ethical dilemmas that confront them in their work of academic administration. Using the qualitative research design, this study afforded the emergence of two research models: (i) the Wheel of School Leaders' Ethical Dilemmas and (ii) the Phases of Moral Sensitivity Practice. The first model provides a description of the nature of the ethical dilemmas experienced by Filipino academic deans, the critical incidents which trigger these dilemmas, and the value conflicts which these deans experience as a consequence of these dilemmas. The second model, meanwhile, depicts a set of moral sensitivity processes Filipino college deans engage in prior to making their decisions about moral dilemmas. In addition, this study also provided an analysis and description of the reasoning processes employed by these deans in solving ethical dilemmas using theoretical thematic analysis. Using the ethical paradigms proposed in the works of Starratt (1991) and of Shapiro and Stefkovich (2005) as frameworks for the analysis, this study described the ethical frameworks of care, justice, and profession as the dominant paradigms used by Filipino deans and their preference for adopting multiple ethical frameworks when making their decisions. As novel research, the empirical evidence afforded by this qualitative study advances existing literature on ethical decision-making in educational management in the context of higher education. At a practical level, this study serves to provide a corpus of tacit knowledge on ethical decision-making processes employed by a small group of academic administrators useful for aspiring and practicing Filipino deans. Findings of this research could also serve as a knowledge-base for crafting ethics courses that could be offered either as stand-alone or integrated in educational management programs at the postgraduate level. Further, the real-life experiences captured in this study could be used as a platform to develop meaningful and relevant case studies for teaching ethical concepts and principles in the Philippine-context. Lastly, these findings can be expanded to explore the ethical decision-making processes of a greater number and more diverse group of academic deans in the country using the mixed methods approach in research.
